It is amazing how RTD successful rebooting Doctor Who and then approx 20 years later destroy Doctor Who.

That point about the show being shot for Tiktoks makes me unreasonably angry. That is the death of art. I hate the idea that we can't have dynamic blocking and framing

RTD at the heart of ALL the issues. Boring lighting, grading, wasting money on a ridiculous TARDIS that is never used and is hard to block as you’ve noted, Murray Gold’s bombastic “feel this NOW” music cues, and the dreadfully immature tone the whole thing swims in. It’s schizophrenic.

The root of the failure of this era is a profound and arrogant disrespect for the shows canon and previous writers work. RTD just tried to magpie his way through the shows past stealing older characters and rewriting them very badly while retconning his own fantasy twist onto the show as if it had always been there..

Sutekh's return pissed me off for a reason I think most missed: rewatch the Harbinger's speech with your subs on. She states that he not only has been stowing away on the TARDIS since that old ep...but that he somehow seduced the TARDIS into letting him aboard! In essence, the show wants us to believe that the Doctor's oldest companion betrayed him with the worst of evil menaces...and has done for centuries! Forget the Timeless Child, THIS breaks the show in ways that scarcely bears thinking about! 🤮🤬

The one thing I saw that I totally agree with was someone saying that 15 was too human.
He's not alien at all: he doesn't tinker or invent or use unknowably high tech things, he has no alien mannerisms or speech, no unusual ticks or behaviors, he handles every confrontation the same way any average real world person would instead of the way a thousands-year-old Time Lord would, he "cries" way too often to where it makes it a comedic moment instead of impactful.
And thus, he never had a proper Doctor Moment or Doctor Speech. The end of Dot and Bubble was the closest he ever got, and even that fell flat because RTD had him idiotically just be frustrated at the other peoples' disbelief, when he could've easily just opened the TARDIS doors to show them that it's a spaceship.
And let's not forget RTD made the sonic remote because "people were using the sonic screwdriver too much like a gun" and then he gives 15 a literal gun to use on "Omega". Why make it a shitty remote instead of going back to something like the 3rd / 4th / 5th / 7th Doctors' sonics? Where it's held upright like an otoscope?

The talk about the blocking!!!!!!! As a filmmaker it's the bane of my existence how every mainstream movie/tv show nowadays is made to be put as a background noise while you scroll tiktok seeing snippets of the very same show cut up as reels

Originally Russell had a 2 season story centered around Ruby as a descendent of a God or something. Then Millie has a falling out of some sort with someone behind the scenes. Probably an exec and not anyone on a day to day, seeing as this is where the first rewrite comes from.

When Millie decides to leave, Russell had to quickly pivot to mostly what we got. Rushing Ruby's story to an unsatisfying conclusion due to limited availability, but hanging onto large story beats due to not having time to completely pivot the second (and probably third ) season.

The second major rewrite is when Ncuti left near February, thus require the heavy retooling of just the last episode. Bonus rewrite of adding Billie to hopefully keep some renewal leverage.

All in all just a shame it turned out this way, I really hope Russell releases a slightly tweaked novella outlining his original plan. Idk, still probably be shite tho

When a franchise becomes obsessed with its own past especially rewriting and contradicting it instead of telling new stories, that’s when you know the people in charge are creatively bankrupt. Since the 50th they've been systematically deconstructing and bastardizing The Doctors personal timeline to the point where everything has fallen apart and the fan base has fallen away because Doctor Who just isn’t Doctor Who anymore.

What they need to do is stop treating it like a second screen content farm and essentially make an apology series, where the wrongs of the recent past are in continuity set right (the timeless child being the biggest but not the only wrong) in order to move on and regain the trust of the fan base they abandoned for the “modern audience” that wasn’t there.

19:00 - When RTD said that about not wanting to make evil disabled characters, I took it quite offensively as a disabled man myself. I mean, Davros was never evil or presented as evil just because his legs don't work, he's evil because he's a sci-fi space nazi mad scientist. It's weird, it's like RTD cares more about appearing left leaning and being on "the right side of history" or whatever instead of actually doing progressive shit that makes sense. His treatment of his female character is also an example of that. Dude is performative as fuck.

Thank you for touching on the blocking and the flat look of this era, it's wild to me that this might be down to how the production team think it'll play on tiktok. Bad enough that story and character development are sacrificed for generating content, to sacrifice visual storytelling for this reason is beyond stupid. Just adds to the myriad of problems weighing this era down.
Will definitely watch reviews of series 1, it'll be kind of strange seeing you guys waxing lyrical about the show after you've had to struggle through watching the last two seasons.

I'd go as far as saying that it's pretty much confirmed that season 2 was penned with Ruby in mind. The Lux animated sequences keyframe originally had Ruby, there's a line in space babies where Ruby says to Captain Poppy I wish we were your parents (the most damning piece of evidence imo), there's obviously her whole arch about being a foundling and helping her foster mother foster children, Captain Poppy never being mentioned despite the doctor previously meeting her the previous season etc etc. Not to mention the tabloid leaks that Millie had a fallout on set and was given a reduced role due to that. Empire of Death also falls into the same bizarre pacing issues that the reality war faced (though not as long mind you) which suggests that there were potentially some reshoots there to write out Ruby. I remember someone discovering that all the pictures pulled up on Units screen showing Ruby's mother were actual photos taken form the actors Instagram which implies that it was a rush job. It just makes much more sense for Ruby's character to have a child given everything we know about her and her family. I could keep going but I think I've made my point.
