Rep. Joe Neguse turns a hearing on a proposed National Fraud Enforcement Division into a test of whether the new DOJ unit would investigate fraud allegations connected to the Trump administration itself.
Neguse tells Rep. Ben Cline that DOJ declined 900 federal program or procurement fraud cases during President Trump’s first year back in office, three times the comparable number under the prior administration. He then presses Cline on whether the proposed division would cover procurement issues, alleged pardon-selling, and other potential misconduct connected to Trump administration officials and allies.
Cline repeatedly says he is unfamiliar with specific examples or cannot answer whether they would fall under the new division.
Neguse’s blunt question: “Why are we here?”
