OMG this IS an incredible interview!!! It is so helpful to learn that someone on Chris's level of playing had to work through chop issues and how he did it! BUT, the whole back end talk of the audition process and mindset was just AWESOME!!! Personally, I've never done an audition, but I would think a lot of what Chris has to say is great things to learn and think about for playing in general. Kudos to you Ryan for a fantastic interview, THANK YOU!!!! And best wishes on your upcoming audition whenever that is!!!
Wow! A blast from my past! I studied the Maggio process in HS when I met Carlton McBeth in 1974. Later, I studied with him in Houston for a week. The "break" that Chris mentions was at high Eb. And this is information that the books or Carlton didn't teach. His main focus was getting the forward embouchure. Adam Rapa, in his "fish-face" video is doing exactly what Carlton was teaching. Even though I could smack pretty much anything up to G above double C anytime because it was NOT based on strength, it was the technique. Unfortunately, no one every addressed that. I moved away from that embouchure to a more "normal" chop concept. And it wasn't that far away. I could "shift" into high gear using the tongue arch/"tongue controlled embouchure" but couldn't figure out how to cross the "break" in either direction. I bet you guys have a copy of "Jake's Method" somewhere. His use of tongue levels makes much more sense. My story ultimately ended in disaster, but I won't bore you with the details. THANK YOU for posting this! I really enjoy your videos. I am re-building again (the 5th and last time) at age 68 and they are great help! 🎺🎺🎺🎺
Amazing conversation! Random thought related to tongue position - it would be cool to see a trumpet player playing in an MRI machine, like Sarah Willis here: https://youtu.be/MWcOwgWsPHA?si=bx6qng_BCo1cw3Z0 Thanks Ryan for all of your content, it’s fantastic!
