CORISCO AND LAMPIÃO: THE RUPTURE, THE REVENGE, AND THE END OF THE BLOND DEVIL | HISTORY OF CANGAÇO

Who was Corisco, the feared Blond Devil, really? What was his true relationship with Lampião? And how did one of the most important men in the cangaço come to distance himself from the King of Cangaço himself, only to react violently to his death years later?

In this documentary from the Ecos do Passado Oficial channel, we return to the northeastern backlands of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s to reconstruct the trajectory of Cristino Gomes da Silva Cleto, the man who would go down in history as Corisco.

From his youth in Água Branca, Alagoas, we follow his entry into the cangaço, his closeness to Lampião, the birth of the nickname Blond Devil, and his rise to become the leader of his own group.

But this story also has a little-known side.

Corisco and Lampião had a serious falling out and spent a long period apart. In this documentary, we investigate what historical sources actually allow us to say about this rupture, avoiding turning popular versions and legends into proven facts.

We will also learn the story of Dadá, one of the most important women in the cangaço, who remained by Corisco's side for much of his life and survived the confrontation that ended her companion's life.

The narrative also takes us to the early morning of July 28, 1938, when Lampião, Maria Bonita, and nine other cangaceiros were killed in Grota do Angico, in Sergipe.

Corisco was not at the camp.

When he learned of Lampião's death, he began a violent quest for revenge, believing that certain people had participated in the betrayal that led the police forces to the Captain's hideout.

From that moment on, the "Blonde Devil" became one of the main figures still pursued by the police forces.

Until his path definitively crossed with that of Zé Rufino. On May 25, 1940, in Bahia, the confrontation that ended Corisco's career took place, becoming one of the great landmarks in the end of the so-called Lampião-era banditry.

In this documentary you will learn about:

Cristino's youth before becoming Corisco;
His entry into Lampião's gang;
The origin of the "Blonde Devil";
The rapprochement between Corisco and Lampião;
Corisco's rise within the banditry;
The story of Dadá;
The disagreement with Lampião;
The period when Corisco commanded his own group;
What happened after the break;
The ambush at Angico and the death of Lampião;
Corisco's revenge;
The confrontation with Zé Rufino;
And the legacy left by Corisco in the history of the Brazilian backlands.

The goal of Ecos do Passado Oficial (Official Echoes of the Past) is to tell the story in an accessible way, respecting available sources and, whenever possible, separating documented events from versions that have become legends over time.

The cangaço (banditry) was not just a story of adventures. It was a phenomenon marked by violence, persecution, inequality, alliances, revenge, and conflicts that left deep marks on the Brazilian Northeast.
