Where was the MTA when I collapsed on the platform against the wall on the IND in NY?  I knew if I tried to stand or sit up, I was going down again like a rag doll. I didn’t pass out, but people just walked around and in a few cases, over me!  They probably thought I was just another homeless or mental case, sleeping it off. Finally, a young man stopped to ask if I was okay.
“No. It’s the heat. I need air.”
He was a burly black man, looked like he worked out.  He grabbed me and got me over his shoulder, military carry style. He managed to carry me up two flights of stairs and into the shade of a building.  He insisted I remain on my back, put his shirt under my head and my feet on his backpack.  Then he ordered the clerk in the bodega next to me to bring water and Gatorade.  Turned out he was on leave from the Marines.  That explained why he could carry me because I’m not what you’d call a petite lady.  He wanted me to go to the hospital, but I declined. I did have him hail a cab to take me home for which he insisted upon paying.  With the AC in the taxi, and another Gatorade, I was soon feeling much better. I asked his name but forgot it, so was never able to send him a thank you card.  
The temperature was nearly 100° F., no doubt hotter in the subway station, plus I was dehydrated and low on blood sugar having gone into the city for a fasting blood test at my doctor. I’d neither eaten or had any but a small glass of water to take my BP meds that morning. N.P.O. from midnight for an 8:45 appointment. As usual, things ran on NYC time, late, so it was nearly noon by the time I got out  of the office.
