This is a record of my solo travels in Hokkaido.

This time, I visited Cape Kiritappu in Hamanaka Town, Hokkaido.

While gazing out at the ocean from the cliffside cape jutting into the Pacific, I searched for wild sea otters.

Officially known as Cape Tōfutsu, Cape Kiritappu is a scenic landmark of Hamanaka Town that offers views of the Pacific Ocean from atop its cliffs. It is also known as a spot where wild sea otters can be observed.

During this trip, despite the cloudy skies, I was able to photograph a wild sea otter floating in the water off the cape.

In the Kiritappu area, water and nutrients flowing from the Kiritappu Wetland into the sea foster lush seaweed beds, creating a habitat for creatures that serve as food for sea otters—such as sea urchins, crabs, and shellfish. This rich natural environment supports the waters where the sea otters live.

In this video, I have captured not only the sea otters but also the atmosphere of the location—including the cliffs of Cape Kiritappu, the Pacific Ocean, and the seascape under cloudy skies.

As they are wild animals, there is no guarantee you will see sea otters when you visit. When observing wild sea otters, it is important to keep your distance and watch quietly so as not to disturb their natural behavior. The Hamanaka Town Tourism Association also provides information on coexisting with and respectfully watching over the sea otters.
