A Case Rocks Cornell University: Gang Rape Allegations Reopen After Two Years

@raniasultan
A shocking case has resurfaced at one of America's most prestigious universities.

A former Cornell University student filed a civil lawsuit accusing seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity of sexually assaulting her at the fraternity's house in October 2024. She claims she was under the influence of alcohol and ketamine and unable to give informed consent.

The case did not result in criminal charges at the time, but after new information emerged and the civil lawsuit was filed in September 2026, the Tompkins County District Attorney announced the reopening of the investigation and the presentation of evidence to a grand jury.

Cornell says it conducted a full internal investigation under Title IX procedures, and that penalties included the expulsion of two students and the suspension of two others. Two of the accused were found not guilty of sexual misconduct. The university also agreed to an independent review of its handling of the case.

Conversely, lawyers for some of the accused deny any assault and claim the interactions were consensual, while the student's lawyer maintains that her physical and mental state that night rendered her incapable of consent.

In this video, we explain:

What does the indictment say?

Why weren't criminal charges filed in 2024?

What prompted the prosecution to reopen the case now?

How did Cornell University treat the accused students?

And what might happen after the case goes to a grand jury?

Cornell Sexual Assault Case Reopened: Why Is This 2024 Case Back in the Spotlight?

A disturbing case involving one of America’s best-known universities is back in the national spotlight.

A former Cornell University student has filed a civil lawsuit accusing seven current and former members of the Chi Phi fraternity of sexually assaulting her at the fraternity house in October 2024. She alleges she was impaired by alcohol and ketamine and was unable to give meaningful consent to what happened.

No criminal charges were filed at the time. But after the civil lawsuit was filed in September 2026 and new information emerged, the Tompkins County District Attorney reopened the criminal investigation and moved to present the evidence to a grand jury.

Cornell says it conducted a thorough Title IX investigation and imposed serious disciplinary consequences, including two expulsions and two suspensions, while two of the accused were found not responsible for sexual misconduct. The university has also agreed to an independent review of how the case was handled.

Attorneys for some of the accused deny wrongdoing and maintain that the encounters were consensual, while the former student’s attorney argues that her level of impairment meant she could not consent.

In this video, we break down:
What does the lawsuit allege?
Why were no criminal charges filed in 2024?
What caused prosecutors to reopen the case?
How did Cornell discipline the students involved?
And what happens now that the case is going before a grand jury?
