For years, José “Pepe” Abrantes was one of Fidel Castro’s closest confidants. He headed Castro’s personal security detail, rose to become Minister of the Interior, and had access to one of Cuba’s most powerful security and intelligence apparatuses. But in 1989, amidst the scandal involving General Arnaldo Ochoa, Tony de la Guardia, the MC Department, and accusations of drug trafficking, Abrantes fell from grace, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and died incarcerated in Guanajay less than two years later.
The official version was that he died of a heart attack. However, his death left a question that still sparks controversy: what did Pepe Abrantes really know, and how far did the chain of command extend in those operations? Subsequent testimonies from Patricio de la Guardia, José Luis Llovio-Menéndez, and other figures connected to the case fueled suspicions for years, although it has never been conclusively proven that Abrantes was murdered or that Fidel Castro personally ordered the drug trafficking operations.
In this video, we reconstruct the story of Pepe Abrantes, his relationship with Fidel Castro, the fall of Ochoa and Tony de la Guardia, Case Number 2, the purge of the Ministry of the Interior, and the circumstances surrounding his death.
Let me know what you think in the comments: Was Abrantes simply a negligent minister, or did he know much more than he could reveal?
