Not only is Weird Al a legit genius, his BAND. They are sooo stinking tight. They can play literally anything. Seen him live 5 times now and he puts on a amazing show.
One situation that says a lot about who Al is. A few years ago both parents died at home due to a build up of carbon monoxide. He found out about it on tour and had a concert that night. He chose to do the concert anyway. Why? ""Since my music had helped many of my fans through tough times, maybe it would work for me as well" and "at least ... give me a break from sobbing all the time." A friend was at that concert and said it was obvious Al was having a tough time but he still put on an incredible show for the fans and allowed the fans to give love and support back to him.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that a middle-aged polka musician can spit better bars than a lot of mainstream 'mumble rappers'? And do it while matching the rhythm of someone else's song? The man is a genius.
On top of Al, huge props to Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz the drummer, Jim "Kimo" West the guitarist and Steve Jay the bass player. I'm pretty sure they almost never use the original music - they always recreate it when doing their songs. Even the Led Zepplin bit from Trapped in the Drive Thru. They're amazing at making the music sound almost identical, and it also shows on all Al's original tracks.
There should be a tribute album of the original artists re-recording their songs with the Weird Al lyrics. They could call it "A Wrong Turn at Albuquerque."
You begin to realize while he's rapping out his lyrics in an avalanche of tech-speak in THIS spoof what a serious amount of knowledge Al has to know about ALL the subjects he parodies in order to do such a great job. There's a lot of research that goes into each one.
Thank you for this one! Your journey is fun to watch. "You're just about as useless as JPEGs to Helen Keller" is one of the coldest lines out there. Pure 90s nerd burns!
