Isn't it always amazing how people refuse to help someone that's being chased and attacked but as soon as the person who is in danger defends themselves, now people want to step in and pull you apart? People are so clueless about violence at all. It blows my mind that they will pick the worst time to try to separate you from the attacker. People have no common sense at all.

Wow, the behaviour of these bystanders that saw you were in trouble and that you actively asked is so pathetic!

As someone who has had to defend himself before, and a black belt, the thing that really annoys me the most about this isn't the bystander effect, it's the idiots who are trying to pull to him off the other guy, not comprehending that he was actually subduing him.

That's when they decide to be 'helpful'.

People are so much more afraid, today, of any conflict than actual safety.

This is the most appropriate, restrained, proper use of self defense I've seen on YouTube

Mad respect for the restraint. Truly peaceful people are those that know violence and choose peace.

I'm sorry this happened to you Chris Bower, as a New Zealander I am embarrassed for the lack of hospitality you received on what should of been a fun trip. New Zealand is a relatively safe place for visitors. The fact that this happened is disturbing, especially considering that the government recently increased the number of police foot patrols in cities to tackle crime.

I did similar in Burger King Sydney, no one helped me and when the cops showed up witnesses said I was aggressor. I said let’s look at the cctv, case closed.

The biggest baddest dude in 99.99% of the rooms he walks into and when trouble comes he runs away.

That's a good lesson right there.

Listening to his story, you can easily see that he truly understands how to defend himself by doing everything to avoid the fight in the first place.

That hold during the skirmish was impeccable. Every part was locked perfectly so all the untrained crazy guy could do is wear himself out trying to break it. Well done.

I love the way a competitor sees life in slow motion and recalls the exact particulars of the fight.

This is what the spirit of Martial Arts is all about. I’m glad no one got seriously hurt and the guy hopefully gets the help they need.

I have a slightly related story to share. I'm a black belt myself, and while I've never been in any situations where I feared for my own safety, I've had to "aggressively disperse" some situations before they got to this kind of point. Once, a fight broke out in a grocery store while I was right around the corner from it. I heard the commotion and rushed around the corner to see two teenagers throwing hands - poorly. They were more a danger to themselves than each other with how sloppy and unbalanced they were. Seeing that, all I did was boom out in my deepest "Dad Voice" for them to stop, and they both froze in their tracks. After they realized that I wasn't going to allow them to continue fighting, one of them started to walk out of the store, so I walked with him - kept a middle distance between him and the other kid to make sure they didn't start back up, and once he left, the other one skulked into some corner of the store and I just let him go. I think he eventually left through the other entrance.

But that's not the important part of the story; It's how everyone else in the store reacted. For me, this was literally nothing - a couple untrained teenagers clumsily fist-fighting barely even registers as an incident for me, but there were other people in the store that were hyperventilating from fear, coming up to me to thank me for "saving" them, and asking me for details about everything that happened for the next half-hour at least. And THAT is the part that really stuck with me. Some people just don't have the capacity to deal with danger or aggression and will completely shut down - it's honestly horrifying. I mean, they were talking to me like I stopped a shooting or something. It simultaneously reaffirmed to me that I need to be the one to respond to danger because few others can, while also scaring the crap out of me as to what might happen in a situation where I needed backup - literally who else is going to help? It was a real eye-opener for sure.
