I find listening to these old very relaxing. I think it because it brings me back to a time when worries were few. In the 1970s I worked at Shea selling soda, hotdogs & ice cream etc. Those days seem like a lifetime ago now. Used to be able to get a seat for as little as $1.25. Back then it was called The Big Shea .....
Man how lucky were we as kids...listening to games on the radio and hanging with every pitch...I was a Braves fan ... Henry Aaron, Rico Carry...Clete Boyer...etc..still a fan of baseball!
Eddie Mathews home run in the 4th inning was the 493rd and final HR in his career with the Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves. He'd add 19 more over the next two season in Houston and Detroit to finish with 512.
Pat Jarvis cuts the ribbon on baseball's longest pine bench at 1:31:06. Jarvis won this game, but would have another reason to remember Nolan Ryan: Three years later, Ryan was the winning pitcher of Jarvis's only postseason decision in the third and deciding game of the 1969 NLCS.
Never heard the short vocal piece at the top of the broadcast before. Can't figure out if it was from WGY-AM or the Mets radio chain. Good to hear Jane Jarvis playing the Irish dance music @ 1:28:25 for the new kid with the Irish name. She probably didn't know that a cowboy ballad would be more fitting for 'Nol-ie. The jig was more fitting for Tug McGraw and she played it for him too.
