King Harald V of Norway died on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 89 at Oslo University Hospital, where he had been hospitalized since August 17. The Royal House reported that he passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m., after his health deteriorated due to a bacterial blood infection resulting from hemolytic anemia. Harald V had reigned since 1991 and was the oldest reigning monarch in Europe.

Harald's childhood was marked by World War II: when he was three years old, the Nazi invasion forced his family to flee Norway. He, along with his mother and siblings, first went to Sweden and later to the United States, where they remained in exile. After returning to Norway, he became Crown Prince and finally ascended the throne in 1991. During his 35-year reign, he promoted a more modern, approachable, and open image of the monarchy, in part by marrying Sonja Haraldsen, a woman without aristocratic background. Upon his death, his son Haakon VIII automatically assumed the throne.
