Hey! Everyone. WATCH A SIMILAR SCENE FROM MASTERS OF THE AIR. IT'S BASED ON A TRUE STORY: https://youtu.be/HM8T2DdjMi8

The poor guy that sneezes, then gets reprimanded is doing a stellar job. Imagine having to relay, remember etc every command in real time under massive stress!!!!

The guy who is playing the guy in the radar room is such an underrated actor

For anyone confused about why Hanks ordered a right turn when the uboat went left, pause the video at 5:01 and look at the dotted line showing Greyhounds course. Instead of chasing the uboat as it was going dead slow and turning left, Hanks turned nearly 270 degrees to the right, coming around and intercepting the uboat from the side. The timeline essentially goes like this:

1. Greyhound is traveling in front of the convoy, screening for uboats
2. Uboat is detected in front of Greyhound. The uboat starts running from Greyhound.
3. At around 3:30, the uboat turns hard left. Hanks now has 2 options. He can chase the uboat to the left, or swing all the way around to the right. In order to sink the uboat, he needs to essentially drive over the top of it. Given the current positions and directions, it would be much more difficult to properly drive over the top of the uboat if he chases it. His turning radius is larger, and he has a lot more momentum in his turns than the uboat does.
4. Hanks deduces that the uboat is going to attempt to swing hard left and go after the convoy. He decides to turn to the right. This puts some distance between him and the uboat. But more importantly, it changes the angle of his approach. Now he is bearing down on the uboat from the side, making it much easier to drive over the top.
5. At 5:01 you can see the new course. He is driving straight at the uboat. From Greyhounds perspective, the uboat is in front of them crossing from right to left. At this point, it doesn't matter which direction the uboat turns, it will still be in front of Greyhound, and therefore inside the depth charge pattern when they pass over. It's too late for the sub to make any evasive maneuvers, Greyhound is simply closing too quickly.

Greyhound and Master And Commander understood their assignments. No frills. No unneeded drama. Historical respect and accuracy. Let the story do the work.

My grandfather was on the DE 43 Decker as a radio operator and the only thing he told me as a kid was depth charges were the worst because they rang his bell. He lived his life as a lineman and was ham radio operator after the war for many years, I miss that man. I’ll have many questions for him when I get to heaven.

Tom Hanks expression of both winning the battle but also realizing so many young men died in the ocean.
Absolute legend. And the whole team. What a movie, what a director.

The Tin Can Sailors were the heart of the Navy in World War 2. All eyes were on the Carriers and battleships but the cruisers, destroyers and frigates were the work horses.

Lesson learned, never travel with Tom Hanks

Dude, how the crew wait for the captain’s confirmation and how he acknowledges the whole team for a job well done! was wholesome!

The opposire of this movie would be Das Boot 1982. The German version of tension. Worth the watch

I was a radar man aboard a DDG long time ago, before I became a submariner. It amazes me to see a functioning CIC this early. Did same stuff 50 years after these guys.

This movie is about 10% good war time movie. The other 90% is edge of your seat, gut wrenching, nail biting, and tense war action. I've watched it a few times and there is no weak character or actor in the whole movie. As always, Hanks is great.

I remember reading one review which called this movie boring. Personally found this to be one of the best war movies of ww2 i have ever seen. You can almost feel the tension in this one. I also read that there will be a potential sequel to this movie,

This is the most accurate depiction of how a bridge team operates IRL I've seen in a movie.

Old school sonar tech here.
Loved this movie!

The eerie whale-like sound effect when the sub is diving sounds like a slowed down version of actual sonar. Making creepy music from it was a great touch for a submarine movie.

I served on a Greyhound in the 70's, radioman. I really enjoyed this film, tks for posting.

The pacing of this movie is exquisite, like they learned from all the mistakes of previous naval war movies.

Years pass, but one thing remains the same: never, ever travel with Tom Hanks...
