We did Salzburg in one day, by train from Vienna, and it turned into one of our favorite days of the whole Austria trip. On the walk in we stumbled into the Thursday farmers market and built a picnic lunch from the last trucks still open. Then we got completely sidetracked at St. Peter's Abbey and made it up Hohensalzburg Fortress just in time for sunset. After that we came back down to the Salzburg Christmas market at night… and all the lights went out.
Planning your own trip from Vienna to Salzburg by train? Here's what we learned:
The ÖBB Railjet from Wien Hauptbahnhof takes about 2h 22m, and there's at least one every hour. Fares start around €20 if you book early. WESTbahn leaves from Westbahnhof and is often a bit cheaper.
A single ride on Vienna public transport is €3.20 in 2026. It was €2.40 when we filmed.
Go on a Thursday. The Schrannenmarkt farmers market runs 5 AM–1 PM by St. Andrä Church. Come early, because a lot of vendors had already packed up when we got there.
Your Hohensalzburg Fortress ticket includes the FestungsBahn funicular (2026: Basic €15.50, All-Inclusive €19.20). Winter hours are 9:30 AM–5 PM, so be up top by about 3:30 for sunset.
The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt 2026 runs Nov 19 – Jan 1 on Domplatz and Residenzplatz.
The Turmblasen happens Thursdays and Saturdays at 6:30 PM, when they dim the lights on Residenzplatz for the tower music.
Prices and times change, so double-check before you go.
