🌻 If you're new here, welcome! I'm Becky, creating videos about minimalism and slow living every Thursday (and Bonus Times Monday). In my videos, I share my journey of embracing minimalist living, from my home and capsule wardrobe to decluttering and finding inspiration for slow living with my daughter.👧
I also talk about intentional living, minimalist finances, the things I no longer buy or own, and what I now choose to purchase more of as a minimalist. Along the way, I reflect on how being diagnosed with ADHD at 35 has shaped my approach to simplicity and inspired my passion for living intentionally with less. I also offer tips on how to inspire your family to embrace a simpler, more intentional lifestyle together.💗

YESSS! A couple weeks ago, while shopping in the grocery store, I saw someone wearing a cardigan I had just donated a week before (it was very distinctive and I had had it for 3ish years). I didn't say anything to her but she and her significant other were both smiling and happy at me, I let them through the aisle, and it brought SO much joy for me to see someone else enjoying the cardigan! I've never seen things I've donated before then and I'll probably never see it again, but it definitely made a lasting impression on me!

I have “holiday “ clothes not worn for 10 years as I haven’t been anywhere on holiday but as soon as I throw them out I just know I’ll book a holiday! 😂😂

Dang, I watched the whole video waiting to see your 10 piece wardrobe, but never saw it.

Clothes is one thing I've never struggled with decluttering. Now books are another story....

Growing up in the seventies and the eighties we didn't want to be seen in the same outfit twice so we did a lot of thrift shopping

I have quite a lot t-shirts. But it is for practical reason here. I live alone and it take me few days to fill washing machine. Having 2 t-shirts would cause me the stress that I do not have always something clean on hand.

Comfort is king for me at 71 !

I struggle with clothing. Not because I have a lot of them but because I am not big on shopping. I am a pretty simple person and I like comfort. I dislike jeans so much and anything too tight on your body.
I hate shoes lol I own 2 pairs of flats and that's all. I am wearing simple dresses for church, and I keep it all the same color or similar shade same with purses I have only two small ones.

Thanks for sharing this video it reminds me Thats ok to own few things with love and to keep it simple.
There is a lot of pressure out there on how to always you need to look ' perfect'
But simplicity is the way to go.

I made a dress for myself four years ago on a whim and I've never looked back. My clothing is exactly the way I want it every single time. Additionally, since I have complete control over color and material, my wardrobe ends up matching by default because I keep choosing fabric in my favorite colors. I have plenty of clothes that I wore before I started making my own that I simply don't wear anymore because I prefer the clothes I make myself. I still get as excited about putting together my outfits every day as I used to get the first few times I wore something new from a store, except my clothes are all several years old. Finally, my rate of acquiring clothes is a lot slower, since I have to spend 4-6 hours making each piece. I currently have fabric for 3 dresses ready to go, but I probably won't end up finishing all 3 for another year.

My biggest problem is changing body size from year to year and sometimes season to season. It makes me sad getting rid of clothes that used to fit me and that I loved.

I am sadly wanting to do elastic waistbands - that officially means I am old😂

I’m really proud of my frugality when it comes to:
1) sportswear (I only have 1 set and it suits me well) ans sports shoes (1 pair of nice sneakers that proved durable in 8-10 years 😅)
2) jewelry (I stopped buying cheap jewelry, and since I don’t have too much spare money I stopped buying jewelry per se 😂 I enjoy wearing 4-6 pairs of golden earrings, that’s it)
3) heels (I only wear 1 pair occasionally when I’m going out with my husband. I have 2 other pairs that I’ve been trying to sell, but will most likely give away:)
4) bras. I’ve noticed that I basically need 2, one beige one for wearing out, and one more comfy, any neutral color to wear at home) I happened to buy a beige non-wired Calvin Klein bra at a bargain price and it’s been a game changer. I don’t want to return to cheap ones.

I don’t have a lot of clothes and made an important decision last week. I decided to buy “work” clothes. So “spa” type uniforms so I don’t wear out and ruin my own clothes while I’m working in my business. I own a small nail salon. Now I can send my own clothes to the cleaners (I own a lot of cotton) and feel neat and groomed while I’m not working. Also, I can not feel the pressure of selecting clothes for work everyday. I work 3-4 days a week so I’m excited to feel more polished everyday (work & off work) 😊😊😊

Great video, the jewelry segment hit home. My 3 year old granddaughter got into an old jewelry box I have. She took everything out and on floor. I initially panicked until I saw 90% of it was crap. I gave most of it to her and out went the rest. I felt the same as I did when I decimated my wardrobe... Free.

My main goal with having less clothes is just making sure all my clothes fit in the way I prefer. Also making sure to buy clothes that are more suited to my body type-and rely less on what trends I do not enjoy like t-shorts, neutral colors or striped tops. Also realizing buying more expensive pieces does not equal quality since I'm more like to reach for cheaper items that are durable. My most worn items are fitted tank tops and camis since they can also be layered in winter.

I would say that a Maybe box would be better than a closet. That way, you can write a date on the box six months from now. If you haven’t gone looking for any of the items by the date, you can just donate the box. That way, you don’t go into decision making crisis again. Handling the items again by pulling them out of the closet will cause too many emotions.

One thing I’ve never seen a minimalist address when it comes to clothing is this : the clothing you need for dirty jobs. Working outside, using bleach around the house, gardening etc. I need a few items like that and it’s hard to work with 😕

@GoingGreenMom 1 year ago (edited)

To anyone wanting color, and a reduced wardrobe..... friendly reminder that tops don't need to match other tops. They need to match layers and bottoms. If you can pick a few neutral colors and maybe a few favorite colors that match lots of things in the bottoms and layers, tops can be super fun. Or you could do 1 category in plains, and then maybe layering pieces in prints. It is definitely doable. I'm planning in modules of 3 tops, 2 bottoms, 1 layering piece, and 1 dress (could be a jumpsuit type thing or a bathing suit or accessory too)..... each module works together, maybe bouncing off a print with multiple colors, then you can add another module with a different color scheme that maybe works with 50-80% of the first one and if you work in that fashion where tops don't have to match each other, but can go well with the pieces you would wear with them it is easier to have things work together.

@christined2495 8 months ago (edited)

I just downsized my wardrobe to 20 pieces, everything mixes and matches and I chose neutrals and if I need a pop of color, I can wear a scarf I live minimally, and have for the last 9 years, but I found I was struggling what to wear each day, now since I did this, I never have that problem anymore. LESS IS best for sure
When I go thrifting, it’s just odd to see my things on the racks, and I notice when ever I donate it’s on the racks so soon after I drop it off
