Steve you used the right words Christmas in October, the 45's you received are a fantastic bonus to your collection.  Brian Wilson's activity with other artist  was widely spread, thanks as always for another enjoyable episode.

Brian seemed to love producing, writing and singing on many other performers recordings. I particularly love the songs Brian co-wrote with Jan Berry on Jan& Dean's Surf City, Dead Man's Curve, Ride the Wild Surf, New Girl in School, She's My Summer Girl, Sidewalk Surfin', Surf Route 101, & Drag City. Brian & Jan were quite a team. Great presentation!

Steve...... WOW.... Talk about Christmas, New Year's, Birthday and 4th of July all at once.  What a gift box from Chris!    I have a few of those record sleeves....but that was really something special.  I love all the info you gathered about Brian's contribution to various recordings.    Thanks to you I have rediscovered my love for Vegatables(but not beets and brussel sprouts).  I have been listening to all the various versions of Vegatables with my headphones.   Of all the recordings I found, my favorite one is the first one I heard from Smiley Smile in the fall of '67.  The arrangement, the selection of voices, the harmonies are all just perfect on that recording.  My very favorite part is during the fadeout, where background voices are humming in harmony with sort of a horse whiney sound.   Somewhere I have heard those voices isolated on that part and it's magnificent.  I'm always impressed what effort Brian took to make every part of every song just perfect.  Lucky us.  Thanks again for all your great work.  Looking forward to next program......Have a great week.... Lamont

Great video, Love the Nes T shirt. Re the Nick Lowe/David Bowie Low background I seem to remember Nick repaid the "compliment" by putting out an e p called Bowi. All the best Ray.

Very cool box! Love those picture sleeves! The Laurel & Hardy "Laughing Gravy" film is a remake of one of their silent shorts, "Angora Love" where they are trying to hide their goat instead of their pet dog. It's a weird comparison but both versions are pretty funny. "Laughing Gravy" also has an alternate ending that survives, something odd for a film from the early 1930s. Jan & Dean did a very fun recording of "Vegetables"- probably the best cover of it I heard.

Hey Steve great! You’re a very lucky man indeed

Interesting episode Steve. I did not know the original laughing gravy single was different than the anthology version.  I will give them a listen. Thanks for pointing that out.

Good stuff, Steve.  The rarest of the picture sleeves is the one for "Barbara Ann". If yours has a paper- like finish instead of the usual glossy finish, you have the rarer version.  I've only seen one copy.  Near the time of the release of he Jan and Dean Anthology, Rolling Stone did a long article about what had happened to the guys since 1966.  I think it was called something like "The Clown Princes of Rock and Roll".

1. Now I wonder if Brian got the idea from the Jan and Dean picture sleeve for You Really Know How To Hurt A Guy to use that monster mask for that black and white Pet Sounds promo. 2. You're right, it's very strange that the Laughing Gravy single says Vegetables is from Smiley Smile. I wonder if listeners thought Laughing Gravy was going to release their own Smiley Smile album, which would have been interesting and bizarre. It would also be nice if these was a multitrack of Vegetables out there so it could be released in stereo, as it was recorded on 16-track tape originally as noted on the Legendary Masters notes. (I love that album, especially the wild Side 4). 3. At first I thought Hang Ten on the Vegetables promo single was an unreleased song, but I see it's now just the title of the promo.

Will check out "Lady Love", by B, D & B.  Didn't know Brian did any songwriting with Billy.  Also, that Brian did any work with Jan Berry in the early '70s.  Neither really surprises me, though.  Think there's a rare Jan & Dean album/CD called Carnival Of Sound, which I think was mostly Jan working in the studio on his own, without Dean (Think Jan was attempting the studio work, as part of his rehabilitation from his car accident).  Don't know if this was ever officially released as an album (if it was, it was probably in 1968), but I think Rhino released it as a CD several years ago.  It's rare/expensive.  This past summer, picked up Jan's only solo album/CD (which I think came out in the mid-late 1990s) called Second Wave.  It's not bad.  He does re-record a number of Jan & Dean songs.  Also, he tries rapping on some of new songs.  Think he picked that up from Mike's song "Summer Of Love".  Think the rapping dates the songs.  Plan on picking up a good copy of Charles Lloyd's Warm Waters lp.  Already have his Waves album.  My guess, in the next episode on Brian, you'll mention Brian helping Johnny Rivers, on his version of "Help Me, Rhonda".

What generous and thoughtful people follow your channel on YouTube !  Seeing all the 45’s , ( …with picture sleeves !” ) , sent me searching for a box of old records that somehow survived our downsizing  .

Coincidentally , the first disc that I pulled from this , “ stack-o-wax “ , was Jan & Arnie’s , “ Jennie. Lee “ on Arwin Records . Curious about other Jan & Arnie recordings that might exist , I searched the internet and was treated to five additional songs that make , “ Lana “ and “ Ten Little Indians “ seem musically complex and intricate .

One thing for certain , a listen to , “ Jennie Lee “ , “ Bonnie Lou “ , and “ The Beat That Can’t Be Beat “ makes clear where Mike Love’s , “ P-Pow , Pow , Pow , Pow “ came from !   …. or , do you suppose that Mike actually wrote those songs too ???

Lot's of cool stuff Steve! Great Michael Nesmith T-Shirt. Such a talented guy - and I, for one, think The Monkees deserve to be in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But Nesmith's solo work fits right in there with the blossoming country rock sounds of The Byrds, Poco, and the early Eagles.
Terrific to see the Jan and Dean Anthology album. I bought it back when it was first released after seeing Dean promote it during an interview with Wolfman Jack on The Midnight Special. I recorded the interview on my Dad's cassette tape recorder and kept it for years. Wish I still had it...and the Beach Boys Fan Club newsletters I subscribed to in the mid-1970s.

I've mentioned before Dean responded to a letter I wrote him back around 1976. In the late 1990s I met him when I was working at a TV station in Portland, Oregon. I reminded him of the Wolfman Jack interview and he said said he had forgotten about it, but needed to include that in his book. I don't believe it made the edit, however! My hometown in Virginia only had two records stores. I had to drive 45 minutes to "The Big City" to find the J & D Anthology album - which I thought was fantastic with the extensive liner notes and photos and four sides of hits since their records were out of print. I loved the story about "Jennie Lee" and  didn't fully grasp the friction between Jan and Arnie...and Jan and Dean. If I am correct, you showed a photo of Dean with Brian that was on the insert from the Beach Boys' "Surf's Up" album. Youngsters today wouldn't believe how hard it was to find "older" music back in the days before the internet!
Another great episode from The Basement Steve! Thanks as always.

I love your Elton John madman pillow In the background Steve during the first segment of your video

This episode is just fascinating with all the info provided. Brian's involved with so many projects especially with Jan and Dean, this was at a time when everyone thought he was locked away in his bedroom. The American Spring album was particularly special because it came out between "Holland" and "15 big once", when we were all crying out for something new from the Beach Boys camp. As you've mentioned "Sweet Mountain" was a great track and personally I think it would have been a much better choice as the first single. The album though has tood the test of time and 50 years on it's still a pleasant listening experience.

What a cool package Steve! You Really Know How To Hurt A Guy is one of those songs I never listen to. But speaking of eBay, I really got to pick up a copy of Jan & Dean Meet Batman. The CD doesn't have the original artwork. The Dean Torrance version of Vegetables is one I don't listen to often. I think I have three or four J&D albums with Vegetables on them. My favorite version of Vegetables is the one from the Smile box set. I also need to check out that Spring album and those books about Jan and Dean. Great stuff Steve! I'm always up for anything Jan and Dean. See you on next week's episode.

Hey Steve - I'm glad you enjoyed the goodie box! With your vast knowledge of the BB's, I'm looking forward to hearing about any information nuggets you find within the documents. Whether you knew it or not, this episode included some bass player geekdom! You mentioned John Cippolina's involvement with the Charles Lloyd album - John was one of the primary members of Quicksilver Messenger Service (I believe "Fresh Air" was their biggest hit) - his brother Mario Cippolina was the bassist during the glory years of Huey Lewis and the News. Regarding Jan & Dean, you mentioned Joe Osborn and Larry Knechtel, both of whom were members of The Wrecking Crew. Joe was Ricky Nelson's bassist in the early 60's, was instrumental in discovering The Carpenters, and among MANY tracks is the bassist you hear on  "The Age of Aquarius" by The 5th Dimension, "Ventura Highway" by America and played on the BB's Sunflower album (and likely others); Larry Knechtel is a keyboardist and bassist who played on several BB's recordings - he's also the bassist you hear on "Mr. Tambourine Man" by The Byrds, and plays piano on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. WOW - I'm really curious to find out about the "new stuff" on your channel going forward!

You could do an “Over Under Sideways Down” theme in your cubbies.
