There is a modeler who likes trains from different eras.  He made his layout a Railroad Museum for the different era trains and just uses an oval of track to represent the museum's excursion rail line.

I think the biggest mistake I'm making with my model railway is not getting off my butt and actually building it 😅

Visit a main line station in the Uk and you could easily see a 1940/50's steam hauled tour train alongside modern era rolling stock , with a Tesla parked in the station car park . It happens , well it does on my layout too - Happy New Year all .

It's not a steam train in the wrong place, it's a heritage service for enthusiasts.

The ultimate model railway experience that I would recommend American Model railroaders visit is Miniature Wunderland in Hamburg, in Germany, Not only are there trains of all types, but there are trucks that actually move, through the Faller system, Ships and boats that sail into harbours, Finally the piece de resistance is the Airport where there all types of planes are made to look like they're either taking off or landing

Be sure to have a couple chairs around the layout that can seat you at the proper level for correct perspective.  We get so used to building and viewing the layout from a birds-eye view... don't forget to kick back once in a while and enjoy your trains running around the layout from a railfan perspective.

As an outsider, I always find the curve radii of model layouts a much bigger giveaway than any of the details mentioned here, so shots not showing sharp curves have a definite advantage.

Sensible advice. One massive giveaway is shiny nickel rails and black sleepers. Paint the rail sides rust and dirty up the sleepers with brown and black charcoals. Makes a world of difference to the realism, particularly in photos.

Well, a Tesla on the highway next to a passenger train of 1940's era Pullman heavy weights led by steam engine can mean only one thing: you are seeing an historic steam excursion railway like the Strassburg, Black Hills Railway or Mt. Rainier Scenic RR. That was my first thought.

I used to do a lot of modelling, not just model railways, but a few more tips from my experience. These mainly revolve around looking at similar, or even vaguely similar, scenes and look for what is missing in the model. For example: Few places have no segregation between rail tracks and everything else; they are almost always fenced off somehow - annoyingly scale fences are far too rare and inevitably suffer from the same scale issues as the pipes on trains as noted in this video. While mentioned is the "junk", but this junk extends everywhere through imperfection - no road markings are perfect and flawless and perfectly straight (and often out of scale in model railways), they are worn, broken and inconsistent. The same goes for the road itself - look outside and see the state of the road and how it is not flawless. This also applies to the buildings, in this video what called out the starbucks more than anything else? The perfect state of the building. In a model railway even the tracks shouldn't be perfect, they should be rusty on the sides and shiny on the top for regularly used sections and also rusty on the top for rarely used sections such as sidings (although this makes electical pick up suck...). Few places are perfectly flat and devoid of life, plants get everywhere and I can look out of my window right now and see plants trying to grow in the siding, along the corners of everything (fences and buildings) and discoloured ballast where sand has taken hold and dead plants are left. It's not perfect at all, even the freshly built concrete maintenance platforms have lines in the pours and textures on them. All small details and any one won't "make" a scene, but their absence can ruin a scene.

1. Painting baseboards is such a simple, easy, no brainer tip I'm amazed so many don't do it. Scenics and detailing takes forever, and while it can be enjoyable, even those of us who love it are still going to need countless days and weeks to properly flesh out a layout, let alone the finishing touches. So, in the meantime, it's an immense improvement to have a simple sandy/grassy/dirty/whatever colour as the backdrop, rather than just bare plywood or foam. Personally I find that it helps keep me motivated to continue working on my project too.

2. Anachronisms aren't necesarrily unrealistic. Heritage railways, preserved railways, museums, steam tours, etc. Even things like 'the transition years' where mid-war steam was regularly seen alongside early diesel. The fact is that only very rarely does an entire railway change overnight. For the most part, the new comes in gradually to replace the old, and some of the old will never be replaced. Just look at Europe and how many grand stations there are, still standing 200 years after they were built, but with high speed electric trains and digital timetables and such. And none of this to mention the venerable designs that seem to defy the laws of time. Take the Class 08 as a prime example. First built in the 1950s, there were still over 50 locomotives in operation on British railways in 2008! It's possible that there might be a Class 08 out there somewhere that's seen both the last dance of steam, and the advent of electric cars like your examplar Tesla!

3. My biggest tip can be summed up quick; If it ain't fixed, start breaking it! The world is an ever changing place, and like it or not, there's always someone or something nearby causing chaos and making a mess. Construction and demolition. Maintenance and repairs. A truly realistic layout will always feature something, somewhere, that's not-in-operation. A locomotive that's derailed. A new point being put in. A warehouse mid-demolition. A leaking water tower. etc etc etc. There's always something!

The Matchbox/Hot Wheels on the layout brought back some childhood memories. I did precisely that on the mix of Tyco, Bachmann, Lifelike, Atlas, and whatever else I could get my hands on at the time. Matchbox and Hot Wheels went on my hand painted roads and there were a few Girder and Panel buildings crammed in as well. When I was a kid those vehicles were plentiful, cheap and well represented most of what was on the road. It was close enough to HO to work. As it turns out, both Matchbox and Hot Wheels are 1:64 - most die cast vehicles are. If you're looking for professional grade realism, yes using them would be a mistake. If you're looking for good enough to represent vehicles of a particular era and place them so they're not front and center - probably good enough to get the job done.

Why I modeled my layout as a scenic museum railroad, I’m able to accommodate all my locomotives and some of my favorite scenic details 😎

I have that huge rail station where walking from one end of the platform to the other end of the platform would be longer distance than simply just walking to the next train station...

Thank you for this Video I not a railway modeler but this is a great to help out when even just making a city or town even in game to help bring it all together and make sense to the others or even just yourself when you look at it. These tip were great thank you again.

Great video! 3:00 - A caveat to this, not sure how this fits in with the history of US railroads, but certainly for UK railways there's something the neat and rigid Eras/Epoch system in the model manufacturers' catalogues gloss over: Just because the railways were, for example, nationalised 1st January 1948 doesn't mean everything magically got painted in the new British Railways liveries overnight. Far from it. My favourite, if extreme, example being photos of at least one forlorn ex-GWR 56XX 0-6-2T, loco 6677, still in plain GWR green (albeit with a BR smokebox numberplate and shedcode added) with their WW2-era simplified/"grotesque" 'GWR' gold lettering on the tanksides right through until its BR withdrawal in the mid-60s, sat awkwardly among other locos that had been repainted into full GWR lettering post WW2, then nationalised BR plain black and early BR crest (early-50s), and finally into BR green with late BR crest (late-50s onwards) by that time! Prototype photographs are key.

A few things I have on my layout are Lighted Billboards that I modified so I could easily change the message. I created street signs for my community. Road signs on the edge of town showing distances to other communities.

Really wish S Scale had more of presense and was built by more companies. 1:64 is such a common scale in the US and it sits in a real nice spot between HO and O. Hot wheels and matchbox are also 1:64 which is nice.

Great advice, thanks for sharing. I like the five minute format too.

3:05 It sounds like a heritage railway
