As someone who is plus sized and in their 30s I get asked frequently when I’m going to “grow up”, start “dressing my age”, and dye my hair black naturally. Or I get mistaken for a teenager or college student.

It’s irritating because I don’t go around telling other people how they should dress. I wish people would mind their own business and keep their opinions to themselves if they don’t have anything kind to say.

I am 46 and i dress the way i want to. I love the gothic way of life and am not ashamed of it. It sounds you are facing gatekeeping which is a problem with goth. I agree with you, there should be more of various sizes for people who are plus sized. If your goth, your goth and age and size should not come into it. I am glad you made this video.

I've had a couple of people tell me that at 55 I shouldn't be dressing alternative anymore. Well for years I couldn't wear what I wanted because I was severely overweight so now I have lost a lot of weight I feel as if I've got those years back. Plus what's it got to do with anyone else what I wear?

Well spoken. Many among us are fortunate enough not to have to ponder such matters, yet that does not mean we ought not. Having them brought to light will, I imagine, serve us all well.

I remember back when we described people by what kind of person they were and they’re character and not with all kinds of labels and umbrella terms.

When I was growing up, if you were Goth, you were Goth. Nothing else really mattered. You were part of the culture. These days it seems like everyone needs a million labels and titles and any trendy thing to seem unique rather than actually just being uniquely themselves. Everyone wants to put everything into a box. We did need labels, titles, clicks, likes, or hashtags to prove we were different and unique. We just lived it. If you were gay or whatever, you didn’t need to say, everyone didn’t know, and really didn’t care. Same for weights, skin color, disabilities, etc. We were all part of the same family. Even with political differences, we just talked and discussed ideas to see where each other was coming from. Even if we had some completely opposite views, we just saw it as that’s who they were based on their life experiences, but either way, we all ended up being Goth. So we could say “yeah, I really dont agree, and here’s why.” But we didn’t hate, other, or demonize each other because the entire rest of the world was ostracizing us. We could be civil, have disagreements, but still have mutual respect for each other, and see each other as equals.

The majority of people talk about freedom but really only mean 'freedom to be mildly myself while mostly strictly conforming'. Those of us who choose not to conform are often targets because we make the conformists feel insecure, because I have found, secretly, they wish they had the courage. I have had more than a few people admit that privately over the years.  

As to inclusivity, I very much agree. As a goth-adjacent AMAB non binary person who wears clothes from all clothing sections, it would sure be nice to be able to buy something of either side of the isle that actually fit that didn't require heavy modding. The women's section is frustrating because 90% of it is for pixie-sized people, and the men's section is mostly 'let's make sure you look like Milton from office space'. Don't even get me started on 'androgynous' and alt brands. Thanks, androgyny does not mean 'I want to look like a tent' and I really can't afford $90 a shirt for the alt stuff. So frustrating.
