Girona has been on my list for a while, so with my mate Dan we came out with the bikes to find out whether it's as good as people say it is, and why so many cyclists decide to move out there.

Can it rank higher than Mallorca or Calpe...? Is Girona The Ultimate Cyclists’ Paradise?

Lived in Palma for 8 years now. Visited Girona a few times. Both very nice. Palma is about 4 times bigger and has more going on, and a very large international community. But accommodation very expensive now. Big airport with lots of links just 10 minutes away, whereas Barcelona is 1 hour away from Girona. If you live in Mallorca you can fly (and ferry) anywhere in Spain for just 25% of normal cost. Easy access to France from Girona is nice. More spectacular scenery and beaches in Mallorca and I think we edge it on the cycling, being so varied and with extra smooth roads (last few bumpy cols being done this winter).

Another advantage of Girona is that you can get there by train from the UK in a day. Hire a bike for your stay. The other places mentioned require flying. I'm going to visit in 2027 to do the EL PIRI

I drove passed there a few times over the last 3 years on way to mallorca , i tried to get parked to see some amazing shops ive seen on instagram ( this was not in season ) , after 1 hr i drove away again via salt ( dont go there LOL ).... i have a place in mallorca in pollenca and really didnt understand why in the off season why its not busy for cycling .... and why main land girona and calpe has more people cycling , then checked the cost difference ..... mainland is so cheep compared to the island... IMO cyclists are missing out its so quite here this time of year ! , flights here off season are onlone from London , Newcasatle, Manchester....

La Fabrica cafe is amazing. Ex pro Christian Meir and his wife have done an amazing job. Menu is incredible. Plenty of his pro days memorabilia around. Must go to if in Girona.

Girona is amazing, I've been there, but I haven't lived. Yet people follow crowds. I can name 20 amazing cycling places that are equally, if not better, than Girona. I can name another 5 great places in Spain, yet people follow people. Doesn't mean Girona is not great, is just that FOMO is real

Not here to shit on Girona, it's a great spot but there are plenty of small towns and cities throughout Catalunya that offer as good, riding if not better riding (for both gravel and road), as Girona. You can't discount the history, the culture, the cafes, the bike shops of Girona. They are top notch, you won't find many places that offer as much for the size of Girona. But if you're goal is to ride, ride a lot of great climbs and quiet roads, whilst surviving on a smaller budget there are so so many better options than Girona. I am not going to name any places, go out and explore for yourself, do the research, poke around on google earth/your mapping app of choice - you'll find a lot of cool places. Also should stake the worries of the people of Girona that are now having to survive in a tourist destination where costs have risen at least 50-60% in the past 5 or 6 years as more and more people move to their city to ride bikes. Anyway, TLDR; Girona is expensive but great, however if you want to ride some awesome roads there are better places to be found. Great video though Grant, always top quality!
