This is fascinating and I really appreciate your sharing. We have hosted a Japanese exchange student seven times and I have been to Japan one time. I have great appreciation for the efficiency of Japanese society and I don’t realize the positives of western society. Sometimes it takes somebody from outside a system to be able to adequately describe it.Helping others seems normal to me. It’s fascinating to hear the Japanese perspective. Thank you so much for sharing this. You go a great way towards cultural understanding of different customs.

I truly enjoy your stories. This one about the cultural differences between Japan and Great Britain reminded me of a passage from a book about the non-Japanese author's journey in Japan.
Perhaps as a metaphor for his overall experiences, he told of the day he was walking along a rural road when he experienced an unexpected downpour of heavy rain. A few minutes later a car drove past him and then pulled over to a stop several meters in front of him. A lady stepped out and ran back to him, handed him an umbrella, and quickly hurried back to the car. The car then drove off, leaving him in the rain but now with a protective umbrella...

Is it possible in Japan that Japanese people are more likely to be friendly to foreigners. I’ve experienced people approaching me offering help, and also striking up conversation, eg at Mt Takao, while admiring the views. Also out in the country I’ve exchanged konichiwa passing others. They speak English, so maybe they spent time outside Japan. Cultural differences are so fascinating. Here in Australia, I often smile or say hello to others on my morning walk, and I think we are more like uk, open to offering help if you see someone needing it.

A lovely incitefull upload, I’m an Englishman currently living in SE Asia and lucky enough to be able to travel to Japan a couple of times a year. At first I was bewildered by the lack of interaction with everyday people, but all became clearer once I realised the order of things. I truly appreciate and respect the efficiency, cleanliness and order of Japan. but I’m also happy when I return to to hectic chaos of SE Asia..

Glad you enjoy life here. The North South divide comes into play with something other than money. I was born and moved home to North Yorkshire after living for 20 years in London. Up here people say hi as you walk past in the street and on busses. In London the people always look busy and on the move so have less time for strangers.

It’s certainly all relative. To people from some other cultures, Britons often seem rather reticent about interacting with strangers.

Good thing that you didn't want to move to the USA, because healthcare costs in the USA are really bad. I am American, and I want to move to Japan, at least living there a couple years. But that is not possible, because I don't want to work in Japan to be legally live in Japan. I really love Japan. I know that every country has its own problems, but I think Japan has a great society/people, culture, and food, not to mention that it's very safe. In the USA, everything is broken from the inside AND outside, especially the outside. LOL! Thanks for the vid!
