The unbelievably stacked Middleweight division in the late 80's/early 90's: Roy Jones Jr, Michael Nunn, Mike McCallum, James Toney, Julian Jackson, Bernard Hopkins, Iran Barkley, Sumbu Kalambay, Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, Michael Watson, Herol Graham, Steve Collins, Reggie Johnson, Lamar Parks, Gerald McClellan, Matthew Hilton, Doug DeWitt, Merqui Sosa, Dennis Milton, John David Jackson, Thomas Tate, Jorge Castro...
Herol Graham's style put Brendan Ingle on the map and it was a great effort in his unique way, but he was up against superb all time performer in the awesome Mike McCallum
1 ) ♾️ 2) MM - McCallum pressing the action, landing to the body and using effective aggression. Graham moving around the ring but not punching much.
3) MM - McCallum coming forward with effective aggression; Graham was HURT and a straight right sent him to the ropes and forced to hold.
4) HG - A better round for Graham, not hitting on the run but landing more.
5) HG - Graham doing better but close round; a slip on a wet portion of the ring and pull down by Graham; still a close round.
6) MM - McCallum had Graham pinned in the corner and effectively landing. Graham moving well around the ring but doesn't stick and move. McCallum evading a lot of mid range punches by Graham.
7) MM - landing combinations; McCallum finding a home for the straight right.
8) MM - McCallum landed a rare jumping - jab hook that sent Graham into the ropes; Graham is ineffective with his offensive spurts with excessive holding.
9) MM - McCallum put a somewhat of a beating on Graham this round; MM finding success with the left hook.
10) HG - Graham did better but the round was close; McCallum with a few low blows.
11) MM - McCallum almost landing the left hook at will, both are tired but McCallum is doing better work while still being defensively and offensively responsible.
12) ♾️, a close round that could go either way.
7-4-1 McCallum, it was a competitive and grueling fight but a clear winner. Graham was ineffective, not busy enough and never showed he could hurt McCallum. While McCallum pressed the action, exhibited effective aggression, hurt Graham multiple times while keeping Graham off balance by making him miss and frustrating Graham.
We always lament the fights McCallum never had vs the big 4 champions. But look how many good fighters he faced and alltime hall of fame fighters he faced.
He was obviously too old in his last 2 fights vs Roy Jones and his final fight vs Toney to have a chance to win. Prior to those fights McCallum had 11 fights vs good to great champions and his record in those fights was 7-3-1.
He beat Curry-McCrory-Graham-Steve Collins-Julian Jackson and Michael Watson. He split 2 fights with Kalambay.
He had 2 razor close fights with James Toney an alltime great who was 11 1/2 years younger than him!
One of the alltime greats not just one of the best of an era.
The audacity of Herol to walk around Mike with his hands down were the actions of a man either disturbed or so sure of himself he did not care. I don't think another fighter other than James Toney was that unafraid of Mike's power.
Round 6 , Pure Class -close up unadulterated in fighting from a bygone era. The skill & endurance of both fighters was on another level. Anyother fighter Herrol Graham would have won but McCallum was tough as they come and was never really recongnised as a true great.
