I have been plumbing for 40 years and have used thousands of compression fittings. I have never used ptfe tape or horrible plumbers paste which clogs the threads. All I use is a smear of grease on the pipe and round the olive AND on the threads so that the joint tightens smoothly and 100% watertight.

@MrJustsaysean 1 year ago

This is really good advice. I never thought about smearing the pipe to seal under the olive, as well as sealing above it. Clear and concise video, really appreciate it.

Some random thoughts: There are two important mating surfaces in a compression joint, one between the olive and the bevel in the fitting and another between the olive and the pipe. They are in parallel so to make a seal they both have to be watertight. Wrapping PTFE tape around the olive only seals one of these surfaces whereas using jointing compound on the pipe and the bevel may seal both surfaces. I say "may" because I suspect that neither PTFE not jointing compound is actually sealing the tiny gaps that water may escape through, they may be simply reducing the friction and allowing a given amount of torque to apply more pressure to the surfaces. This is a known effect in engineering that if you lubricate the threads on a bolt and torque it to the spec then you can over tension the bolt and snap it.

Some people argue that there is a third surface at the back of the olive which acts as a backup if the front surface leaks but this is wrong. Any water that passes the front surface escapes via the thread. This might be a reason to use PTFE on the thread but probably not.

Excellent. As with all good teachers, you explain not only what exactly to do, but why you do it and how it actually works.

Best video I've found on this. It is ridiculous the metal compression fittings manufacturers say don't use Teflon tape or compound on the connection. When I have done so (connected dry), they almost always leak immediately.

Another great video Mark. Always really clear detailed explanations. Thank you!

Best video ever on Youtuve teaching about compression fittings

@naylor2006 1 month ago

Thanks for this video, I used method 3 and 4 today and this guide was perfect. Method 3 I like the best to avoid potentially getting the crud into the system, however method 4 was required when I could not easily access the pipe, so placing compound on the taper first then offering it up to the pipe worked great! No leaks yet!

@kruzsoyokaze4615 2 months ago

thank u for this video. I couldnt stop the leaking at the compression joints after installing a new kitchen mixer. Attempted at least 4 times and it still leaks. Came to watch your video, and followed your method. The leaks stopped!! It worked!! So, yes, dont go in dry with the olive ring....put a white tape over it!!

Hello, thank you for your video from México City 🇲🇽 . Your advice has helped me a lot. I didn't have a clue about compression fittings until I saw your video. Thank you again very much for your help and God bless you!!!!

You talk about accessibility but what about JG quick connect plastic pipe and fittings, running central heating under floorboards and in loft spaces??
