Between 2020 and 2022, the Tigray civil war left 600,000 dead in two years. More than in Ukraine. And nobody was talking about it. Now the situation is escalating again: the peace agreement has broken down, seven armed groups that were previously fighting each other have just announced a coalition with a clear objective: to overthrow Abiy Ahmed, and fronts are already open in Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia simultaneously. If nothing stops it, there could be almost a million armed Ethiopians facing each other in the territory of Africa's second most populous country, home to the African Union and a key player in the Horn of Africa.
The problem is that Ethiopia cannot fall without everything around it collapsing with it: access to the Red Sea, the routes to Bab el-Mandeb, the defaulted Eurobond, Chinese loans, and the 21 million people who were already living in food insecurity before the escalation began. The UAE, Turkey, Israel, China, and Russia are all involved in the conflict, each with different interests and, in some cases, backing both sides simultaneously. In this video, we analyze what has just happened, why Ethiopia is the most important country that is least talked about, and whether Abiy Ahmed, with his Nobel Peace Prize hanging in his office, can survive three wars at once.
