The MPC X SE (2023) was already an update to the original MPC X (2017), with 4 GB of RAM and a 48 GB SSD, focused on more power without changing the base chassis.
The MPC XL (launched at NAMM 2026) inherits that, but adds an 8-core Gen 2 processor (4x the power of previous models), 16 GB of RAM (vs. 4 GB in the X SE), a 256 GB SSD, MPCe 3D pads (from Live III), Q-Links OLED displays, and a dedicated sequencer.
It fits into the historic "XL range" by name and as a flagship studio instrument, like the samplers of the 90s.
It's the same XL machine as always, but with more capabilities for the DAW.
The MPC Live III (2025) shares the 8-core Gen 2 processor and MPCe pads with the XL, but is more compact (8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, built-in speakers).
They aren't "the same machines," but the Live III is a portable version with extras (MPE-like via pads), similar to how the Live II evolved from the original Live without being "next generation." And it's not an XL.
Both expand MPC as a standalone DAW with MPC3 OS, prioritizing plugins (up to 32 on the XL) over pure sampling.
Akai pivoted from samplers (1990s-2000s) to workstations/DAWs starting with MPC Renaissance (2012), and now with MPC 2.0/3.0 they offer powerful PC-free hybrids.
There's no drastic "new generation"; it's continuous refinement for modern production, which is understandable given Akai's perspective.
