Francisco Goya was ostracized from the court in the final years of his life. He had been deaf for years, isolated from society, and his experience of war, political violence, and religious oppression had greatly darkened his view of humanity.

In this video, we explore the final years of Goya’s life and the series that later became known as the “Black Paintings”; 14 dark and terrifying paintings that Goya painted on the walls of his home and never intended for public display.

Starting with “The Disasters of War” and the depiction of human violence, we move on to works such as “The Witches’ Sabbath,” “Saturn Devouring His Child,” “The Drowned Dog,” and “The Battle with Clubs.” Why did Goya paint such images in the final years of his life? Did he really no longer believe in God and hope? And what do these paintings say about his view of humanity?

Perhaps to understand the darkness of these paintings, we need to understand what he had apparently seen throughout his life.
