Who can you trust with your health?
In 2024, a Swedish medical researcher invented a fake disease called Bixonimania. She gave it symptoms anyone could have. Wrote fake research papers. Planted them online.
Within weeks, every major AI chatbot was diagnosing it with total confidence. Google Gemini explained its causes. Perplexity quoted how common it was. ChatGPT diagnosed real people with it.
She left clues. The author was named "the Lying Loser" in another language. The papers thanked Ross Geller from Friends and the crew of the Starship Enterprise. One paper literally said: "This entire paper is made up."
AI missed every one. A real medical journal cited it

It doesn't help that several major papers from peer reviewed journals have faked their data. It's the old computer science principal GIGO, garbage in, garbage out.

As a retired pathologist who's spent a lifetime studying diseases, I can confirm that there are a lot of fake diseases, hatched by 'researchers' seeking grant money. One doesn't need AI to fall for them, most people don't know any better, and the con men know they'll believe whatever they want.

That stroke story is truly tragic. But - my late mother had a stroke - while in a nursing home. The doctor made his rounds, checked her, and scolded her for not going to physical therapy. Never noticed the stroke symptoms, including a paralyzed arm. I diagnosed it and got her care when I visited her a few hours later (she died about a month later). This kind of medical "misses" are part of the reason that some people are so ready to believe what they find online.

So, I diagnosed myself after going to 3 doctors who didn't diagnose it. Then I went to the 4th doctor, asked him to test for it, and voila, that was it. Thankfully, there are some doctors who are humble enough to listen to their patients. On the other hand, I have an aunt who has been told some crock things by a certain doctor, and so she doesn't eat things that would be healthy for her.

In many places, it takes so long to get a doctor appointment, that we no longer have a choice but to look online.

During the last 5 years I have watched as good doctors were struck off or reprimanded for using repurposed drugs as they always had, governments and celebrities repeating things that turned out to be false, trusted doctors quoting a government narrative that has been proven to be false, profit-driven drug companies with immunity sending out products with fact sheets completely blank, huge government overreach into the medical profession and bodily autonomy to name but a few horrors. In the UK the NHS has been purposely underfunded and sold off to private companies for years, in the US you can lose your house if you get sick, everywhere incurious doctors are now seemingly trained to treat every symptom with a different drug and patients who want to find the cause of their problem as a nuisance, it is considered normal to prescribe a drug and a second drug to counteract the side effects of the first. When you are alone at night screaming silently with fear and getting no help, what exactly are you supposed to do in a world that is now making euthanasia acceptable for the homeless or the sad. AI is a small part of the problem.

The problem isn't with doctors. The pharma industry isn't going to spend billions of dollars to develop a pill or treatment that cures diseases with just a few doses. They focus on disease management. This way they can recoup their R&D costs. If they cured diabetes tomorrow, an entire industry would be wiped out. And I was prescribed medications that did more harm than good several times.

What worries me is the plethora of medical videos that are popping up in my feed that turn out to be AI generated, I often have to ask AI which ones are fake.

I've learned through the last seven years while watching my mom suffer with multiple diagnoses, being treated only for symptoms and drug side effects, that the medical profession - doctors - have lost their curiosity, possibly the single most driving force behind truly effective health care. Even worse in rural areas.

👍 Increasingly, I do not watch a medical video without: Tapping the title to go to Description. Scrolling down to MORE. Scrolling down. At the bottom are the disclaimers. They all amount to “Don’t blame me. Blame the AI I used.” When that appears insufficient, I tap Transcript and scan it more quickly than listening to a 20 minute video. If AI junk, I memorize the site title and never watch that site again. I review my Subscribes and if someone who used to be good has gone more and more AI, I drop them. Thank you for this pathetically hilarious video.

I love the AI prank whereby the user says to AI “the car wash is 700 feet away. Should I drive there or just walk?” The AI answers how much more efficient it would be to just walk over to the car wash.
