Glad they lasted as long as they did -- The Fall is a deep well
40 YEARS! No rest, no playing the oldies, no trend following, all new stuff, new gigs, always - They may be the only band to have achieved this! Whether you dig it or not, that's the ART life - It's obvious the man gave everything of himself into doing it, which is the romantic ideal for the life of an artist
John Peel sums up The Fall's appeal so succinctly: "With The Fall, you can never be absolutely certain what you're gonna get. Sometimes it may not be what you want, but it's still - they're The Fall, that's all you need." World's best band. Ever.
I engineered the recording of a Fall album at the end of the 80s. I remember Mark as a very nice guy underneath but profoundly messed up on speed and breaking up with his girlfriend at the time, and the band were all alcoholics. It was chaos and not in a good way, the studio staff were glad when they left. Craig Leon produced the sessions, very nice guy too and good to work with.
I got my first Fall experience when he did a Von Sudenfed gig with Mouse on Mars at Glasgow. He was absolutely shambolic and I fucking loved every second of it. The chorus of boos at the end of the set made it even better.
