The smell of Brasso on the tip of the pace stick when threateningly held under your nose is very memorable.

Some shocking stitching on some badges

Congratulations to the RLC Corporal, for best turned out solider.
Great to receive the award and recognition from the Major.

its nice that they give the officers a shot so they dont feel left out, bless their hearts

Keep the traditions alive  well done to all and the organisers

I was para reg, so not particularly an enthusiast on drill and ceremony, but I  have to say some of these lot would have been thrown off the square for their appearance..

An amazing tradition that others would find hard to understand.

The pace stick was originally used by the the artillery to count the paces between their guns. The original pace stick was a gift to an infantry Sargent major during the WW2 for adding protection to a battery inplacement stopping the advancing Nazis dead 🫡🍻👍

It must be the sense of tradition that gets these lads to do the competition as it's entirely voluntary.
Blooming hard work and good for them - ! 😁

Thank you all for your service,  this Military pace stick tradition must be preserved,It is how excellence is developed and shaped by discipline and each officer must master it . Normally and routinely used by all NCOs as a standing order with in each, regiments, battalion, division, corps, company, unit and section level. This tradition keeps ,both foot and arms drills alive and active as well.and it is how a disciplined Force 's command is delegated from high command to low command, and vise versa which every single officer must practice regularly, and master it, first by numbers and then by heart. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Woah ! Can't get over the stubble showing. Would have been AF 252 in the day.

this all comes in handy on your CV  when your finished NVQ 1 playing with bits of wood

Ex-matelot here and a submariner as well but I loved doing drill. Nothing beats that sense of team and belonging to the (SENIOR) services. Well done to all featured here, it still fills my heart with pride for the UK Armed Forces! I'd be happy to stand with you all. Of course that might not be reciprocated, the most dangerous thing in the world is a matelot with a gun.

Wearing a beret like a flat cap, 🤣🤣🤣

Well done to the RLC corporal.  My grandfather and his brothers from Hampshire, served in thd First War in the ASC.

My grandad was a WO2 in the Welsh Guards - he'd have loved this!

Sgt Major’s tie and collar while giving top tips!

Hi, the best demonstration of the traditional pace stick usage was shown to us in 3 Para when we arrived in Bahrain in the early 1960’s and set up camp on the spare runway of the RAF. The camp was to contain all the units of the Battalion Group which was about a thousand men. The Roman tradition of setting out the cam formations was well known to our RSM who knew in his head what would be the best layout, roads and defence even before we arrived with the advance party. The ingredient that was used was the Pace Stick. Every tent area was marked out and had to be in a dead straight lines. The RSM even went up in a helicopter to make sure that it looked correct from the air! One problem that was overlooked, when we dug our trenches to form defence areas we found that we were only two feet above the high tide mark, hence each hole flooded! Well, all back to building Sangers. Cheers mate.  Harera

I used to love a bit of drill

Just goes to show you that a giant wooded protractor can be a deadly in the right hands.
