ŚB3.16.24-Lord Protects Dharma
1.Lord’s Purpose:Welfare of All Beings
•Kumāras address Lord as sattva nidhi-reservoir of all goodness.
•Because He is source of goodness, He desires kṣemaṁ janāya-welfare of all living beings.
•Dharma is not merely social law; it is auspicious path that reconnects souls with Supreme.
•Lord protects dharma by:
-Personally appearing(avatāras like Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Kalki).
-Empowering righteous rulers(e.g., Mahārāja Parīkṣit restricting Kali).
-Acting through His own potencies to remove irreligion.
*Protecting dharma protects environment for spiritual progress.
2.Subtle Word Iva
•anabhīṣṭam iva-“as if undesired.”
•Lord never desires destruction of dharma. Yet, through His potency as kāla(time), dharma gradually declines.
•Decline &restoration are part of His arrangement:
-Satya yuga:full dharma.
-Tretā, Dvāpara, Kali:gradual decline.
-End of Kali:Kalki restores dharma.
*Even apparent decline is under Lord’s control. Nothing happens independently.
3.Lord Removes Enemies of Dharma
•Lord destroys opposing elements through His potencies.
•He may act through:
-A righteous king(Parīkṣit confronting Kali).
-A devotee(Arjuna at Kurukṣetra).
-Direct avatāra appearances.
•Nonviolence is not weakness. When irreligion becomes extreme, force may be necessary-but only for dharma’s protection, never for selfish gain.
4.Lord’s Humility Does Not Diminish His Supremacy
•Kumāras declare:naitāvatā tejaḥ kṣatam-“By this, Your potency is not diminished.”
•Examples:
-Kṛṣṇa bows before elders.
-Kṛṣṇa washes Sudāmā’s feet.
-Kṛṣṇa carries Nanda Mahārāja’s shoes.
•Unlike worldly leaders Lord’s humility is not weakness. It is His freedom. He loses nothing by bowing; His supremacy remains intact.
5.Humility as Līlā
•Lord’s submissive acts are vinodaḥ-transcendental pastimes.
•Līlā means free activity, not forced by karma.
•Examples:
-Child Kṛṣṇa bound by Yaśodā.
-Butter stealing pastimes.
-Rāma’s exile.
•These do not reduce His divinity. They reveal His sweetness &attract devotees.
6.Dharma &Tejas
•Honoring qualified persons increases spiritual strength.
•Disrespecting them causes loss.
•Lord Himself demonstrates proper conduct by bowing to brāhmaṇas &devotees.
•His behavior instructs society:“Honor those worthy of honor.”
ŚB3.16.25-Accepting Lord’s Decision
7.True Surrender
•Kumāras say:“O Lord, whatever punishment You wish to award to these two innocent persons, or also to us, we shall accept without duplicity.”
•They surrender completely:
-No conditions.
-No insistence on their curse.
-Even willing to accept punishment themselves.
•This is śaraṇāgati-surrender where Lord’s decision is supreme.
8.Change of Vision
•Initially Kumāras judged Jaya &Vijaya harshly.
•Later, they realized their mistake.
*Devotees should not be judged by temporary faults.
•A devotee may struggle, make mistakes, or show old habits-yet his deeper commitment to service is what matters.
9.Avoiding Fault Finding
•Fault finding is spiritually dangerous.
•Principles for balance:
1.Take good. Accept beneficial points.
2.Do not magnify faults. Do not make one mistake devotee’s identity.
3.Be sāra grāhī. Extract essence; leave aside defects without hatred.
•Bhagavad gītā confirms:one engaged in sincere service is sādhu, even if mistakes are seen.
10.Inspiration vs. Respect
•A devotee’s class may not inspire us, but that does not mean he is useless.
•Different styles benefit different audiences.
•Even if doctrinal mistakes occur, take correct point &leave incorrect.
11.Why Fault Finding Corrupts Heart
•Constant focus on others’ mistakes makes one fault finder.
•Instead, appreciate effort:
-Someone chanting.
-Someone hearing Bhāgavatam.
-Someone struggling yet continuing service.
•Transformation can happen quickly-e.g., Dhruva Mahārāja at age five attained Lord.
12.Respect Protects from Vaiṣṇava Aparādha
•Kumāras themselves erred due to anger.
•Their realization:“We are not controllers.”
•Humility protects us from offenses.
•Safest attitude:“I do not know full situation.”
Essence of Both Verses
