Eleanor of Aquitaine lived some eighty-two years in the Middle Ages, from eleven hundred and twenty-two to twelve hundred and four. She wore two crowns, that of a Queen of France and that of a Queen of England. She was joined in two marriages, the first to Louis VII of France, the second to Henry II Plantagenet. She brought ten children into the world, among them Richard the Lionheart. Her inheritance was Aquitaine, a land wider and richer than the immediate possessions of the French crown. Her story leads from Bordeaux and Poitiers via Paris to England, from the crusade to the Holy Land back to the courts of the West. This calm sleep story tells her life in numbers, places and quiet turns.
