Honestly, Julia's moves that she used while blind folded really reminded me of the old school Gracie Jiu Jitsu that you see in the old black and white videos with Helio and Carlos demonstrations.

Thanks for posting this. I studied Daito-ryu Aiki Jujitsu for a bunch of years. People got it confused with BJJ, but when I explained we used weapons they were more confused.

I think it's important to keep in mind that JJ is self defense and combat from an ancient time, with very specific incentives and conditions. As an example, if you someone is generally armed with a sword, you tend to be a lot more wrist grabby than strike orientated. Hence why JJ has so many wrist grab defenses.

And this framework of ancient Edo era incentives and conditions is why the art is the way it is, and why comparing against modern incentives and conditions, does it a disservice.

love your videos josh!! i started watching you a few months back and you got me in to judo actually and im from sweden now i train judo 6 hours a week / 4 classes a week and im 17 years old, i have my yellow belt test december 10th, and recently made it out of drug and alcohol addiction, im so thankful i found you brother!! i have made it from 45kg too 90kg now:)

Love your videos! There is a lot of martial arts content, but so much of it is basically tribal chest thumping. I find your approach of "What is to be learned here" a breath of fresh air. Same reason I love Jesse's videos.

I think these guys have the same problem as most catch wrestlers seem to have. They love to demonstrate at full speed and with intensity, so their uke responds in a borderline panic, which makes the rest of us think "man, they're just playing around". I genuinely think if they approached the locks more gradually, they'd get less shit from outsiders.

I’ve been training Japanese jujitsu for 7 years now, and with a lot of the techniques, I sometimes wonder myself whether they would actually be effective in a real fight. This is also something we often discuss within the group during classes.
Overall, though, I think the sport is quite complete. We spar every lesson: standing with punches and kicks, standing judo, and ground fighting. I can hold my own reasonably well standing against a karateka or kickboxer, and on the ground I can do fairly well against a BJJ practitioner. I can also keep up reasonably well during a judo class. I can even manage fairly well in an MMA class.
So I’m probably never going to be the best at any one discipline, but overall, I think it’s a good foundation to start with if you want to learn self-defense, as long as you train it in the proper Japanese jujitsu way.

what advantage are you getting from a staff that you can't create with your own body? one of the dvmbest questions I've ever heard. you get wayyyy more leverage on locks and chokes with the staff and you can also use it to strike, and it's very, very lethal as a blunt weapon.

Japanese jujutsu and its modernized Western versions are really underrated.
They are excellent for learning a wide range of techniques, including throws, ground fighting, striking, chokes, joint locks, and weapons.
It's a "jack of all trades, master of none" approach, which is a pretty powerful combination from a self-defense perspective.

Great video! I appreciate Nikko Jiu-Jitsu for opening up and sharing with us. There is a Japanese jiu-jitsu guy who cross trains a lot of BJJ. I believe his name is Scott Taylor, he's a Japanese Jiu-Jitsu coral belt and a wrist lock specialist. He's been on a few youtube videos demoing his unique style of groundwork.

The bit with the blindfold was interesting, because when I trained jujutsu I would often close my eyes when practising the techniques, so that I could feel what I call the "lines of force" better. Kind of like when you close your eyes to hear a quiet sound better. It helped me get a better feel for the correct angles and body positioning for the greatest leverage, and once I knew what feeling I was looking for I could find the right line of force with my eyes open without having to think about it too much.
