For most of my life, I equated love with the certainty of losing someone. My name is Heath Dalton. I grew up in a small town called Millbrook, where the houses sat close to a slow river and almost everyone knew everyone else. It was the kind of place where people waved from their cars even if they did not know your name.

When I was a child, I hated that. I did not want people knowing anything about me. I learned very early that the people closest to you could disappear. My mother left when I was five years old. I remember pieces.

Her brown coat hangs near the front door. A suitcase beside her leg. My father is standing in the kitchen without speaking. The sound of rain tapping against the window. And I remember asking my mother where she was going.
