In Midnight X-Men #1, a vampire plague swept New York years ago and never ended. Human vampires and mutant vampires, called empires, have fractured into family houses and clans locked in a cold war, held together only by something called the Compact. Magneto watches from the House of X, bound by that treaty along with Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Polaris, Havok, Toad, and Unus. Gambit, Psylocke, Glob Herman, and Empath hunt through the dark as empires themselves. And Cardinal Stryker has arrived from Rome with a papal decree and his Purifiers, carrying a mandate that is not aimed at vampires generally — it is aimed at the mutant ones.

The issue leans hard on X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills, the 1982 Chris Claremont and Brent Anderson graphic novel that introduced William Stryker and the Purifiers. Stryker even says the line out loud. But Hickman inverts it: the man who once pointed at Nightcrawler as proof that mutants were demons now needs Bishop Kurt Wagner's cooperation, because there are finally monsters more demonic than the blue elf he built a crusade around. Cyclops gets the best entrance of the book, a resistance broadcast seeds a mystery about what the vampires are smuggling onto the island, and the last two pages between Kurt and Storm reframe everything that came before them.

Why Midnight X-Men #1 matters:
Midnight X-Men #1 is part of Marvel's Midnight Universe horror imprint, released October 7, 2026 alongside Midnight Spider-Man #1 and Midnight Fantastic Four #1.
The series establishes two vampire classes: vampires are turned humans, empires are turned mutants.
Storm, Gambit, Psylocke, Glob Herman, and Empath are all empires in this universe.
Nightcrawler is Bishop Kurt Wagner, a Catholic bishop who has not been turned.
Cyclops is referred to as the last X-Man.
Cardinal Stryker and the Purifiers are direct analogues to X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills (1982) by Chris Claremont and Brent Anderson.
The Compact is a blood-signed treaty between vampire and empire houses, summarized by the phrase "the peace must hold."
