I encountered Mr. Harris in Dublin's Leeson Street in the 80's...He was pissed, wandering between cars against the flow of traffic, & throwing punches at the cars that offended him! 😆😂🤣

He was fascinating. And "mad, bad, and dangerous to know."
Mostly fascinating.

Beautifully done. Thank you for covering Richard Harris. MacArthur Park was a cheesy song lyrically, yet Harris performed it so passionately that I loved it. You really did him right in this episode. He was a complex, guileless and fascinating man. It says a lot that all of his sons and both of his ex wives attended his funeral. Bless that Irishman

My daughter and I were heading directly Towards Harrods Men’s Department Store in December for Xmas shopping the MOMENT the Bomb 💣 went OFF! I had a Feeling Just PRIOR and Told the DRIVER to turn AROUND and go through the Park to SELFRIDGES Department Store! That FEELING saved ALL our LIVES! Ty Heavenly Father! 😇🙏❤️

I loved "A Man called Horse", "The Wild Geese" and that Roman Emperor bit. And, I still love listening to "MacArthur Park' which, by no means, was a "strangely odd" Hit back then. It fit perfectly into a String of similar pompous Psychedelic Opera Hits like "Eloise" by Barry Ryan, "Excerpts from a Teenage Opera" by Keith West and others. The ones who grew up at the same Time would surely understand what I mean.
However, what I loved most for went unmentioned by you. An Album called "The Prophet" from 1974, where he recites Kahil Gibran's Words of Wisdom underlaid with Music composed by Arif Mardin, best known as Producer, Arranger, Studio Manager, and the Vice President of Atlantic Records. I always saw him as Part of the British Version on of "The Rat Pack". Guys like Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, Oliver Reed David Hemmings. Irretrievably gone & priceless!

This guy had, as the cliche goes, a storied career. For me, he's a 60s guy. I saw him in Camelot and loved him. But i saw it recently and couldn't believe how long and boring it was. Funny how that happens. You touched on "MacArthur Park". It was big? You have no idea. It was BIG. And part of the 60s trend of 7minute AM radio records...the Beatles Hey Jude, and Simon &Garfunkel 's The Boxer were part too. These broke the rule that songs on the radio had to be under 3 minutes. I love that Irishman Harris did Princess Margaret. I don't know who got the better deal.
Cheers❤

Jimmy Web’s MacArthur Park is a masterful piece of poetry
And Richard Harris hits a walk off home run with it.

Mc Arthur Park is a classic. Like his father, Jared Harris is a brilliant actor.

Excellent video about another of my favorites. I knew a lot about his work and his life, but as usual, I learned a lot from watching this video. So well written, and I always enjoy your voice. Thank you once again, Ava (hope I got the spelling right!).

I remember the Harrod's bombing. It was horrifying. They had planted a car bomb..right before the bomb detonated a man was carrying his little boy on his shoulders. They were deceased outright and everyone saw it everywhere. Not them dying but them walking past the car...then the aftermath...
The Field is a fantastic film. If you haven't seen it, treat yourself.

I 'discovered' Richard Harris when one of my junior high teachers took a group of us to see Mutiny on the Bounty. I had no idea who the young(ish) actor was, but I remembered him afterward. (However, it didn't hit me like seeing Albert Finney in Tom Jones - that made me a fan of his for life!) I saw Camelot in the theater when it came out and even bought the soundtrack for some reason. When MacArthur Park came out I was in college and thought it was pretty sappy, but it definitely was a hit (#2 on the Billboard Hot 100). Interestingly, Harris wasn't the only one from Camelot to get into pop music - David Hemmings made an album around that time as well, but unlike Harris he had started out singing as a child. However, he didn't have any hits.

Outstanding video as always.

I saw Harris in a traveling production of “Camelot” at the Orpheum in Memphis in 1983 or 1984. I was sitting in the nosebleed section, but still grateful for the experience.

I was never that big a Harris fan until he was old. His Arthur did not hold a candle to Burton's. And you correctly described the Mac Arthur's Park phenomenon as the bizarre 60's drug thing that it was. As a person who was always sober during that era, it was a disconcerting time to say the least. You almost had to be a wastrel to have any credibility.
The fact that he achieved some redemption late in life is a tribute to his talent and fate's uncanny ability to find the right person for the right role. Usually.
But I will never understand the need of very talented people to throw their lives away in the most appalling fashion and call it "living".
