Take a second to appreciate this reporting and writing... "Hawaiian legends have always celebrated speed along this coast. Makoa, a courier of King Kamehameha, was said to be so fast he could carry a fish from Hilo, on the far side of the island, to Kona without having it die. Today's Ironmen don't carry fish, but they carry the dream of victory, and only one of them is fast enough to keep that dream alive through the long day to the finish."
At first I thought they were talking about four different people, it took me a minute to realize that it wasn't mark, allen, dave, and scott but mark allen and dave scott
The best part of this video, in my opinion, is the silence of the commentators right around 18:00 in the video. So much of today’s tv sports involves this idea that there can never be any “dead air”, so commentators will be running their mouths adding nothing to what is happening. Here, there is a section where the viewer knows the stakes....you know how serious both guys are in their focus on trying to win. The so called “dead air” really drive home that moment for me. The silence of the commentators allowed for the ambient sounds to really come through....the feet biting the pavement, the talking of the runners at water stops....the sounds of the motorcycle cameramen. All of it....it really put me right there on the pavement.
15:08 he says "I don't want to create a dynasty here" and yet he went on to go so, following Dave Scott's dynasty. Incredible story and well done documentary.
