My hometown, Kristiansand, is probably one of the biggest legacies of the Danish rule in Norway. It’s Norway's biggest and most important southern city today. Christian IV ordered its foundation in 1641

Fantastic video! Being a dane it´s great to hear and see the history from a norwegian point of view. Tordenskiold is pretty much celebrated as a danish hero even though we know he´s norwegian.

My ancestors were hired by the king and moved from the Netherlands (Gelderland) to Copenhagen along with 3 other families of builders to help defend the Danish against the Swedish kingdom.
They specialised in building star fortresses and after finishing the older part of the first permanent ramparts/citadel (Kastellet) gained nobility and knighthood and were awarded a lectureship award in complicated architecture at the King's University. We are still in Denmark, around 600 members of the former Wan der Borchs and the Bartholin branch of the family's.

So well done as always. The colonial era of Scandinavia is something I'd love to see more media explore.

What an amazing video - finally making it into the algorithm. As a dane I would love more videos about the shared and complicated history and events of Norway and Denmark.

A small mistake, the 1814 treaty of Kiel, ceding Norway to Sweden was absolutely not signed voluntarily, it was an absolute demand from the victors of the napoleonic wars. They ha promised Sweden they could get Norway if the Swedes would join them, so that's who you need to blame for it.

Being from Norway, i realy love this channel.

This provided stepping stones through several centuries and filled in several blank decades! A serious reflection on our shared values, well done.

I studied history many years ago, here in Denmark. My second-to-last semester, however, I got to spend in Oslo. My family has long, long ties to Norway, and in many ways, it has always been my second home, so going there to study felt warm, well-known and wonderful.

"Greit", in every sense of the word.

And because I love Norway as deeply as I do, I am eternally grateful that we are no longer one nation. Norway is as distinct as we are, and always was. Denmark treated Norway mostly as a source of income, and little else for centuries, and it was wrong.

One of the classes I took in Oslo, was on "The History of Nationalism, from the French Revolution to the Third Reich".

Suddenly, in one of our first lectures, a fellow student put up his hand to ask a question. The lecturer, sensing nothing wrong, let him.

This other student, SEETHING with indignant rage, his voice trembling and glaring absolute daggers at me for some reason, then asked "Isn't it a fair comparison to say that the relationship between Germany and France after the war of 1871 is equivalent to the relationship between Denmark and Norway today?"

Yoh could've heard a pin drop in that room. Some people thought he surely had to be joking, most realized he was deadly serious.

The lecturer, thankfully, recovered his wits and looked at me, saying: "well, since we have an actual Dane in the room today, why don't we ask her if it's comparable?"

I answered, in absolute honesty, that Danes tend to see Norwegians as some our best and finest friends in the world. A nation of people with whom we shared almost all our values and mindset. And that, on a personal note, I just hoped we might one day reinstitute the Kalmar Union, but under NORWEGIAN leadership this time around ... since that way we'd all get a share of all that oil money.

The lecture hall erupted in cheers, and I was invited out for drinks after we were done. Oslo is a legendarily expensive city to go drinking in, but I drank for free the whole evening!

And the angry student apparently dropped out of that series of lectures two weeks later, stating as his reason that he refused to be in the same room as a Dane, since we were only interested in re-invading Norway and enslaving everyone living there.

Frankly he was a nutjob.

But I made some cool friends because of his dumb question.

My dog is Danish and he is much loved!
