The Gospel Timeline Doesn’t Match History — Here’s Why | Leena Einhorn

Was Jesus really the man described in the Gospels — or could the story have been shifted through time?

In this fascinating MythVision episode, Derek Lambert speaks with author Leena Einhorn about her controversial historical reconstruction of Jesus and the New Testament.

Einhorn examines Josephus, the Egyptian prophet, Judas the Galilean, Theudas, Barabbas, the Jewish revolt, and the striking similarities between events described by Josephus and stories found in the New Testament.

The discussion explores a provocative possibility: that the historical events behind the Jesus story may belong to a different period than the traditional Gospel chronology suggests.

They also discuss the possibility that Jesus was connected to “the Egyptian,” whether the New Testament contains hidden historical layers, the relationship between Jesus and Paul, and what happened to the historical figure behind the Gospel narratives.

📚 Leena Einhorn's books discussed in the episode:

The Jesus Mystery
A Shift in Time

What do you think? Does Josephus provide clues to understanding the historical Jesus?

Lena Einhorn has authored a few books on the subject of the historical reliability of the gospels. She has found there was a shift in time comparing the gospels to outside sources such as Josephus Flavius. Parallels between Josephus and the New Testament may suggest that this character called "The Egyptian" may have been the real Jesus of history. We also talk about who paul "MIGHT" be.

Fascinating indeed. It shows how messianic or other teachings of the time were dressed up using an actual historical backdrop and the sensitivities of the times warranted the putting on some veils and time shifts. Most people who were present would have probably figured out what happened but in other Provinces it became irrelevant. Thus the "myths" and personal identifications of dressed up characters started out and they continue to this day. Ms. Leena does a marvellous investigative job that does ring true. Please, Derek, bring back Ms. Leena, Ms. Leena, please come back to the show. Your books are a must. Thank you.

"Just as Lena Einhorn argues that the socio-political reality of the 50s CE in New Testament texts was shifted back to the setting of the 30s CE through a deliberate 'time shift'—leaving structural inconsistencies within the text—a similar 'narrative transplantation' can be observed in early Islamic texts, albeit on a spatial plane rather than a temporal one. While a significant portion of Quranic narratives, agricultural references, and theological polemics align seamlessly with the geography, ecology, and historical ecosystem of Jerusalem and the Levant, the historical placement of these narratives onto the Meccan focus mirrors the scenic shift found in Einhorn’s theory. Just as the historical remnants of the 50s bleed through the 30s setting in the New Testament, the topographical, agricultural, and theological traces of the original homeland (Jerusalem and its surroundings) leak out from beneath the text draped over the Meccan geography in the Islamic narrative. Both operations represent an effort to re-map the coordinates of textual reality—one in time, the other in space—in order to construct a new founding identity and domain of legitimacy."

Judas the Galilean (and his sons): A rebel leader who led a resistance against the Roman tax census in 6 CE. His sons were later crucified by the Romans.Jesus ben Ananias: A rustic prophet who, in 62 CE, entered Jerusalem during a festival and continuously prophesied the destruction of the city and the Temple. He was arrested, beaten by the authorities, offered no defense, and was eventually killed by a Roman stone during the siege of Jerusalem.Theudas and "The Egyptian": Messianic prophets in the 40s and 50s CE who led thousands of followers into the wilderness promising miracles (like parting the Jordan River or collapsing Jerusalem's walls), only to be routed by Roman cavalry.

This would make a great documentary. I would love to see all of the proof text Josephus and the New Testament and I would like to see charts and timelines.

I have literally read hundreds of books on the early Christianity, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Paul, James, and mostly the historical Jesus. It culminated in writing my own book, "How Far Have We Strayed? Interpretation, Christianity, and the Historical Jesus." When I read Leena Einhorn two books, they shook me to the core because it answered so many questions that bounced around in the back of my mind. It was definitely a "Wow!" moment after so many years of searching. My questions if I had a chance to talk to her is what about Paul, James, Peter, and other items mentioned in Paul's Letters.

Great interview with Dr. Einhorn, I’ll look for her second book. There is a young woman I’ve found who also talks about Jewish texts written in layers, both in the Old and New Testaments. She might also be a good guest, her name is Destiny Finn. Looking forward to more. 🇺🇸🇺🇦

Derek, it would be amazing if you could somehow get Lena Einhorn and Robert Price in the same 'room', so to speak, and I would be fascinated to hear what kind of conversation they would get into!
Einhorn could bring up her hypotheses, and Price could riff on them and fill in some of the 'gaps' with his voluminous knowledge of the various contexts of the various time periods in question.
And likewise, I'm sure Dr. Price would have dozens of questions for Dr. Einhorn to explore her ideas more thoroughly, since he is so eager to absorb as many perspectives and ideas as he is.
What do you think? Wouldn't that be an awesome conversation to witness?? 🤔🤯

Whoa. Her hypothesis is huge. Ordered two of her books.

When I first heard—quite by chance, a few years ago—about Leena Einhorn’s thesis that Jesus was a transposition of the "Egyptian Prophet" and John the Baptist was a transposition of Theudas, it struck me as a discovery of immense significance. Whether or not the academic consensus embraces it, she hit the nail on the head, grasping the essential key to the labyrinth surrounding Jesus of Nazareth. There are, of course, other details open to debate—such as the fact that the Jesus figure is more of a puzzle that must also incorporate Judas of Gamala. However, there is one important point I wish to highlight: one cannot shift the timeframe of one figure while keeping that of others unchanged. If Mark substituted the figure of Jesus for that of the Egyptian Prophet, he must have read * The Antiquities*—or at least *The Jewish War*—which, given how books were circulated at the time, points to the very end of the first century. We need to place greater emphasis on the fact that Mark, not just Luke, was familiar with Josephus’s work. Another point is that Leena Einhorn’s thesis implies nothing regarding the historicity, dating, or ministry of Paul of Tarsus, as Flavius Josephus does not mention him. Finally, while we can identify Jesus with the Egyptian Prophet in military terms, we cannot do so theologically, because we do not know what that figure actually proclaimed. The words put into Jesus’s mouth may simply reflect the views of various editors or popular wisdom. I do not believe it is necessary to claim that the creators of the Gospels were followers of the Egyptian Prophet, as it appears the latter’s followers perished at the hands of Roman troops. Nevertheless, thank you very much, Professor Einhorn, for this vitally important discovery. Academia will eventually recognize it, even if we have to wait decades. Thank you very much.

What an exceptional scholar Ms. Einhorn is. I am going to start one of her books on Audible.

I've always thought that Lena's work was very important. I also marveled at how overlooked it generally was. Hoping this interview can help boost interest in her material! Regarding her conclusions themselves, do you think that the early writers may have purposely shifted the story back in time to avoid political trouble?

Another true genius who did the work found that the NT is lies.

Imagine my shock. 😮 Clutch the pearls! How many experts do we need? The errors in the books, the copying, the rewriting is visible to the naked eye. But the deep work requires experts with the objectivity and means to tell us what's there. And STILL people don't believe it.

The brainwashing is extraordinary.

But we choose our myths. Maybe you need it to be the one your parents or society feed you. Ok. (I chose the sexy God, same promises). But just recognize it's not what the POWERS tell you it is. They had an AGENDA.

I write fiction. I use real history. Down to astronomical alignments. Am I writing future Gospels? 😂

This woman is a hidden pearl. Looking for her book!
