Kubrick: "It's better to have 200 takes than 100"

Such a lot of nice cameras!

Shocked in the first 10 seconds seeing how much money there is in front of you!!

Recently got my hands on two Bell & Howell 16mm Filmo cameras from the 1930's. They are built like tanks (literally) with all steel construction, used to film much of WWII, and used as crash test cams into the 90's. I had a little trouble getting them going at first. It took some mild disassembly, sewing machine oil, and some motivation to get the gears moving again after several decades.

From a digital perspective, the idea of oiling your camera sounds crazy but that's just part of having an old school camera.

That kind of repair or maintenance involving gears, springs, etc. might seem intimidating to some, but at the end of the day it's just parts and pieces that fit together. Arguably WAY easier to fix mechanical stuff than parts popping off of your cinema camera's internal motherboard (speaking from experience on that one).

Exploring the analog world continues to be a lot of fun and I encourage anybody interested in at least testing the waters in whatever way you think is fun!

P.S. Can we bring back rotating turrets on cameras? They look cool and they're surprisingly convenient lol

Great video, thanks 🙏

Those 400' are possibly ex TV news cameras?

Great video and advice! I'm so glad that there are still people out there who know how to shoot 16mm film and keeping this medium going. I really enjoyed this video. please keep them coming.

you're a good man. thank you.

There is a color penalty when you film outdoors with tungsten stock and no type A filter then attempt to color correct it out: you get a different rendition of reds.

Thank you so much for the great description.

Great video, very real world. Its such a hard thing to shoot film these days with the cost. As someone who loves film and particularly 16mm its great that there are passionate people out there (yourself included) that are keeping cameras going and recording and distributing what information they know 💚

That 500T and Kodak Shoot Film bit was hilarious. Insert Vision3 Memes page. 😆🤣

Excellent content. Thank you for it. I've been thinking about buying a Bolex h16 for months because of all its features, mainly the ability to do interleaving, something very few 16mm cameras can do (I know the Kodak Special can too, but its weight puts me off a bit). So, seeing the prices of the Bolex Rex/reflex and the fact that their viewfinders are dim, I haven't quite decided on a non-reflex model. I love what you did with your super sharp test of the h16m and the laser rangefinder setup. I hope someday you can make a video of how you did your setup and show how you measure with the laser. I'm sorry if it might be a bit obvious to experienced users, but I'm sure that for many newbies, like myself, it could be very useful content. Regards from Ecuador.

Having more light than you need and stopping down will give a better result than struggling with bare minimum light and full open lens.
Filmmakers satisfied with 'available light' in dark situations end up with muddy, unsatisfactory exposures.
Study the old Hollywood lighting DP masters - how they achieve a 'low light' nighttime scene without it looking crappy.

The lowest ASA I've shot (still film B&W) was a 40ASA German brand can't remember the name. Long exposures with a high f.stop created some great landscape images.

Hey! Could you please tell me if the Angénieux Type L2 17–68mm f/2.2 covers Super 16?

Great video thanks for sharing this info. For short/feature films dubbing is also an option. It’s fun and it works. You’re going to have to do foley work anyway. “Reaper” is a VERY affordable and easy to learn multitrack digital audio workstation software that can help with that. Also lastly- these cameras are very sensitive to vibration, even when on a tripod wind will cause a shaking you only may notice after shooting. I advise using a beefy tripod not a video camera tripod.

Great thorough video! I really do hope people start realising that it’s not that hard to get into 16mm. Do you think you got enough info from gatekeeping Aussie man to do your own grading tutorial? That would be great. I also have Model K I want to convert to single perf. Any tips? Is the registration issue avoidable or is that just a defect of the modded “design”. Cheers!

Quick comment you can make a sound Barney or blimp for the Bolex H16; have someone that can sew make one out of a moving blanket and see a zipper to make it sealed. Works great.

Also; the Bolex EM motor for the 400’ magazine attachment on the H16 makes that thing weigh like a TON. And it’s super loud. Best to just plan on becoming efficient at loading 100’ rolls in a black bag. With practice it’s not so bad.

Thanks for making this video. Do you know any type of stabilization to use for the Arriflex SR2? I don't want to use a steadicam because it's a little to expensive for me. Also, do you think LED lights (like Aputure) are good enough for film instead of using tungsen?
