you dropped this! Gracias!

Poor Sensei! Her cat ears are backwards. 🥱😴

I think Americans and English tend to soften their words a bit too, but not as much as Japanese.  I'm always shocked by how direct Europeans speak, so it just be extra shocking for Japanese 😄.

hay yuriko-chan your headphones are really cute 😊😊

This is actually a very interesting topic! And it came right on time! I've been talking to a Japanese girl for a while, and sometimes I really find it hard to understand what she means (or how she acts). Not because I don't understand the language (we actually both speak English), but because of cultural differences. I have found myself seeing her as "cold" or distant, when in fact, maybe it's just her way or "protecting" her personal space. This video has been really helpful to understand that. Thank you. I'm from South America, and people here are much more direct and upfront. We also see silence as something awkward or uncomfortable. And I guess that also applies to how in Japan, "silence" in the sense of "not talking", even by text, or not saying what you really think, is quite common. We have had our arguments, and most of them were misunderstandings due to these different views on life. I got carried away, sorry! lol. but thank you again, yurichan!

Hum staring at people is not a good idea here in the USA.  There has been many bar fights started over such a think.  American use much less formality, as you know I am sure.  I have to remind myself when interacting with a Japanese person to address them correctly.  Your advice is wise, and I am sure it is better to error on more formality than less.   Another nice video even with the cat ears on backwards LOL.

Yuriko-san, why have you waited so long with this video? 😊
Actually many foreigners are not familiar with Japanese naming system.
They don’t want to be rude, they are just not aware of Japanese norms.

Two years ago I did a small research on this topic to understand how to write properly to you and to some Japanese colleagues at work.
It was all new for me.
I learnt that -chan is used for small girls or for close friends.
-san is the most natural and respectful way to use with all Japanese people while keeping proper distance.
So if you start your video with „Hello, I‘m Yuriko“, I‘ll write you „Yuriko-san“.

In general, if you feel something uncomfortable while communicating with foreigners, feel free to address it more „directly“. Like you did it this video.
We are not so good in reading the air as you are 😂

Regarding formal and casual speech - beginners often start learning Japanese with polite speech. This is all they can use.
Casual speech looks like almost another language 😊
But when advanced learners master casual speech too, they may use it more often than polite. That’s may understandably confuse Japanese people.

Thank you for the video, it was very useful!😊

Many good points. But I'd like to say one thing about the people who felt somebody was staring hard at a young woman on the bus in what appeared to be a sexual way. Your idea of larger or contrasting eyes is something to consider. But I think we also have to give credit to what the other passengers noticed. They may not have been racially prejudiced. It's usually possible to identify a sexual predator. Physical groping, especially on crowded trains, is a real problem. Rather than trying not to notice, people can surround and protect victims.
