I believe your approach to jazz improvization is the best to be found anywhere.

He understands.

Thanks, you just turned a light on for me.
I am 77 years old and started my jazz journey during covid. I love the standards like Misty in Eb. My frustration is that my playing sounds "clunky" and unconnected and now I know why. It's like if I visited Italy and tried to communicate with the locals using a phrase book without understanding the language.
You're right I do play around 6 or 8 tunes but generally can only remember the last couple.
Now I fear that it's too late in life for me to reach a standard of fluent playing incorporating some improvisation.

Omg! You always keeps it a honest and real! Everyone with wisdom and knowledge isn't necessarily a good teacher. You are an Excellent teacher!   TOP NOTCH!!  I appreciate you sir! #respect!

What are the first ten jazz tune you would recommend to a level 2&3 player?

You're so underrated. You've taught me so much

Jesus… your channel is absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for the work you put out here on YouTube. Every video I’ve watched of yours so far has provided me a very unique insight that I haven’t found in any other channel on YouTube

How do you know me so well, when you don't know me? Well done Shan. I've been thinking about joining and this put me over the edge.

This is great - understand the flow as Barry says be a mover not a hitter. I am incredibly guilty of aiming too high and be dissatisfied. I shall change my approach.

You explained me to the tee. I learn these nice jazz standards but are can only play 2 or 3 but still not understanding what is really going on. I do know the major scales in all 12 keys harmonically because I forced my self to play them daily. Just signed up today. Thanks!

You are right - you're articulating something really important in a very clear way!

This is super helpful.  My teacher right now has me learning misty, my only previous lead sheet is cheek to cheek.  He has me doing a bunch of diminished chord movement, and its really frustrating, and I feel like part of it is that I should be learning a few more tunes first to start to see some of these connections you talked about and get them feeling really comfortable before I start adding a lot of movement and passing chords

Magnificent talent.

Very glad i found that video on my second jazz standard I am learning.
Grateful for the information

Great video Shan. As a player in the read and remember group, this is very applicable. I find I need to keep refreshing songs I've learned to retain them, otherwise they're gone. I've got a few I'll probably never forget, because I've played them for years, but the new ones I learn don't stick around.

Holy crap, yes. Like learning the instrument again for every song!

This is really good instruction. This is exactly the info I want. And I especially resonated with the basic core advice “fall in love with the work!”

Ive not heard this point about real time stressed too much. Dig the mellow vibe!

This lesson is pure gold, thank you.

Thanks so much, Shan. Recently discovered your channel and enjoying your excellent instruction—so very clear and thoughtful! Well done and much appreciated.
