In this video, Chuck Carnevale, co-founder of FAST Graphs and widely known as Mr. Valuation, explains why an all-time high in the S&P 500 doesn’t mean every stock is expensive—or that investors should avoid stocks altogether.
Using FAST Graphs, Chuck examines companies including Caterpillar, Fair Isaac, Fidelity National Information Services, McCormick, Deere, Accenture, Amdocs, and Edison International to illustrate a central investing principle: it’s a market of stocks, not a stock market. Individual businesses have different earnings growth rates, valuations, and investment opportunities.
Drawing on the first chapter of his book, All Investing Is Value Investing, Chuck encourages investors to focus on two essential questions:
• Is this a business I want to own?
• Can I buy it at a fair price relative to its earnings potential?
He explains why owning stock means owning a piece of a real business, why short-term price movements don’t necessarily prove an investment decision right or wrong, and why even a great company can be a poor investment if you pay too much.
A lower stock price alone doesn’t establish value. Understanding the business, its fundamentals, and the price you pay remains essential.
The takeaway: focus your research on the businesses you own and their long-term earnings potential, rather than letting market headlines drive your decisions.
Watch as Chuck shows how FAST Graphs helps investors put price, valuation, and business performance into perspective.
