Vingroup partners with Alstom in a noteworthy Metro train deal: 117 trains are planned to be manufactured and assembled in Vietnam with technology and technical expertise transferred from the French railway group.

According to the documents, the plan includes 200 Metropolis trains. Of these, the first 83 trains will be produced at Alstom's Valenciennes Petite-Forêt factory in France, while the next 117 trains will be manufactured and assembled in Vietnam. Alstom will provide technology, technical expertise, equipment support, production tools, and key components.

Notably, the trains in question will use aluminum alloy bodies, regenerative braking systems, and aim for GoA4 automation level, meaning fully automated operation.

This is not simply a story about buying trains from abroad. A key point is Vietnam's ability to gradually build factories, engineering teams, assembly experience, quality control, and a supporting railway industrial ecosystem. However, the document also notes that the 117 trains manufactured in Vietnam still require some crucial components supplied by Alstom, so the localization process will have to take place step by step.

Will the Vingroup – Alstom deal become a turning point, helping Vietnam move from buying trains to gradually mastering technology and building a domestic railway industry?
