A large crowd gathered at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2 for a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and raising questions about the functioning of the Election Commission.

The demonstration was led by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke. Prominent personalities including Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Vishal Dadlani and Prakash Raj were seen supporting the protest. Several people on stage wore T-shirts featuring Mahatma Gandhi.

During his address, Abhijeet Dipke invoked the legacy of Gandhi, Ambedkar and Nehru and said their contributions remain central to India’s identity. CJP also indicated that the Mumbai protest was part of a wider campaign that could expand to other cities and eventually reach Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

The organisation has continued to demand Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation while questioning the SIR process and voter-list revisions. The Election Commission and the government have rejected allegations of political wrongdoing.

What did the turnout at Shivaji Park look like? Why did prominent Bollywood personalities join the protest? What did Abhijeet Dipke say about the next phase of the movement? And is CJP preparing for another major protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar?
