Its interesting because Shadow Generations tries to reframe what happened a bit. Basically, according to Shadow Generations' Gerald's Diary entries, GUN covered up everything and the current members of GUN have no idea what happened. The Commander was a kid at the time and didn't know anything, and the only information they ever found out was through Gerald's fractured journal, which was splintered and most of the remaining data came primarily from Eggman specifically.

Its even explained how the GUN Commander's "predecessor" (which maybe was canonized into Ian Flynn's pet name, Abraham Tower? I think Sega just said "yeah, sure, whatever" because they didn't really care about bringing back the GUN Commander at all).


Either way, though, Shadow Generations really does reframe it as a complete cover-up, and after the incident in Shadow the Hedgehog Abraham Tower went out of his way to dig up the REAL truth of what happened 50 years ago so he knew exactly what happened and could report it back to the President.



NOTE: At the time Shadow the Hedgehog came out I loved the game. I legitimately did love it. I was also 15 at the time and my parents hated anything mature in games like cussing, blood/gore, guns, etc. (Maybe they were more lenient on it because it was only E-10+ lol...)

I haven't played Shadow the Hedgehog since so I have no idea if I'd like it today. I've thought about retrying it just for the hell of it, but I'm constantly playing new games I've never played before all the time instead and its hard for me to get back into games I played years ago.

My attention span is so bad, I watched the first few minutes of the video, saw the Heroes footage, then went to play Heroes for a couple of hours.

As a teenager, i was obsessed with this era of Sonic games. I ended up S-ranking all of them but for Shadow I went even farther. I attempted to do every single possible path which means I had to play through the game like 350 times. I stopped at around 200 tho. But I really love this game despite its weird nature

I will forever be thankful that this game introduced me to Magna-fi and Sins of a Divine Mother. They are really underrated and made good stuff outside of Shadow 05. It's a shame that Magna-fi's Who I Am was cut from the game. It would've fit perfectly with devil doom.

I remember starting the game and hearing the gunshots for the selections and looking around to see if my parents noticed it. I wasn't sure if they knew shadow... shot guns.

Then he dropped a pg13 swear. I turned the volume all the way down until I knew my parents were asleep.

I still have my old memory card with my save where I not only beat the game, but I started trying to 100% all the different paths you could take for the slightly different path names.
I freaking loved this game and never really understood why no one else did :(

37:54 The contrast with the textures of the characters mimicking 2D artwork and the nitty gritty look of the stage is probably why I think  especially with Westopolis it looks like Shadow was modded into a different game

The videos KEEP GETTING BETTER AND BETTER. You summed up a pretty nuanced game pretty well and also suffered the journey of Expert Mode like a true champ. Cannot WAIT for the 06' video.

BACKGROUND:
10-Year-Old me in 2005 got this on sale at a EB Games when my dad wanted me to pick a game. I had the choice between Shadow & Sly Cooper & considering I loved Heroes & Classic Sonic, I thought I'd like Shadow.
- 2005: Played through it, got bored of it & went back to Heroes
- 2006: Went back to it, spent over half an hour in Westopolis trying to find the last alien, felt drained after finding it & went to Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom
- 2008: Decided to go back to it, chugged along through, got to Lost Impact, spent over an hour on the level trying to find the last Artificial Chaos, turned the game off after immediately finding it & went to Scooby Doo: Nights of 100 Frights
- 2012: Went back to play it from scratch while playing every mainline Sonic game in order before playing Generations. After so many times where I put the game down, I finally beat the game & never touched it again.

My problem with Shadow the Hedgehog is it feels like a chore that was monotonous to play through. The worst aspects in the Chaotix missions in Heroes were made into a game. Only most of missions are Grand Metropolis & Mystic Mansion where there's a large amount of the objective & you have to find every single one rather than a certain percentage, especially if you're taking the True Good or True Evil path where those missions are your only options.

I'll give credit where credit is due for Shadow: The gun play was decent, they were the first game to do rail switching well, & a few other things. But whatever good was in the game felt minor & paled in comparison to all the negatives of the games.
