That .25" group was insane, but it does show you can have 1 incredible group and the next one can fall apart. The little things that have big effects. Thanks for sharing.
Great work brother ! Always through and smartly done. I’ve been finding that it boils down to what your gun likes no matter what the box says on it. Keep rocking it out sir.
You’re completely right on how those numbers making a speed difference. I’ve been told to put a 3 in front of the first two and it would show in meters the velocity. Like you I found a great lot of center-x starting to numbers where 27 and tried a new lot at 28. The 27 has always shot amazing with sd’s of 4 and the new lot of 28 was averaging sd’s of 6 which wasn’t bad but I could see the difference on my x count. The average is what really confused me. The new lot of 28 was only 5 fps faster and it’s got me wondering if it is just poorly made ammunition. Great video Jason
I believe that heavier barrels also shoot better, not simply because they have more mass and reduced harmonics, but because they are thermally more stable. A string of shots heats a heavy barrel less than a lighter tube with less mass, so a round sitting in the chamber of a heavy barrel is exposed to less temperature variation = more consistent shot to shot velocity variance as the shot string proceeds.
That is how mine shoots. It has a sweet spot from 30-70 rounds after cleaning where is shoots really well. Either side of that 40 rounds is anybodies guess.
The speed of sound through the steel barrel is approx 20,000 fps, many times faster than the bullet travels. The barrel is resonating long before the bullets exits the barrel, hence why bullet velocity is important for gaining the best accuracy and why different velocities matter.
Excellent video and shooting on a hot and humid day. Have you considered using a Harrell's type tuner? It can (tune out) compensate for small variations in velocity but can not tune out bad bullets. On some (not all) of my Eley Match and Lapua Midas + ammunition the tuner needs somewhere between 3 to 5 clicks or thousands of an inch to adjust for the tightest groups at 50 and 100 yards. Both my Falcon and 2500X actions react the same. TY JD
Good to see you back at it Jason. You always shoot very well. I bed the first 1 1/2-2” of my barrel and that dampens the vibration at the source. More ammo shoots better afterwards.
