After hurricane Sandy, I lost everything in my 120 gallon tank, we decided to get stand by generator, so we got 22kw Genrac stand by generator and now even I am out of town I don't have to worry about the house and tank without power, apex and internet is on power backup and generator turns on within 60 seconds of power outage.

Unc went from "im leaving the hobby" to "I won't give up"
Really feel for him, one of the best home reef tanks in the world

Thanks, motivated me to finally unbox my Predator 3500, add oil and fuel, and test it out so it's ready when I need it.

Hello, or should I say “Quack.” It’s been a while since I’ve commented, but I’ve still been watching most of your streams and videos. I changed my YouTube name and profile picture to another famous Disney Duck, but I’m still the same person behind the Donald Duck account that used to quack in your comments all the time.

I am actually a university student at Penn state, state collage, studying to be an ichthyologist and I live in the resident halls. To improve my mental health, I’ve had a small 25 gallon freshwater aquarium crammed in my room for the last two years I’ve lived on campus. Just last fall, after years of research, including watching most of your videos and streams, I finally was able to convince my parents to let me get a much more expensive reef aquarium instead of exclusively having freshwater aquariums. I sent my 25 gallon freshwater aquarium home and exchanged it for a 29 gallon which became my first reef.

Campus definitely felt the storm pretty hard and my residence hall just recently got power back, despite most other residence halls haveing power restored much quicker. Fortunately, because I am new to the saltwater hobby, at least in terms of actually keeping a saltwater aquarium, and as such, I was setting up my aquarium very slowly. At the time I lost power, I had a pair of ocellaris clowns, a yellow watchman goby, a sizable cleanup crew including hermits and snails, green Star polyps, and a small colony of zoanthids. To my extreme disappointment, I lost large portions of my coral colonies, my goby, and a large portion of my cleanup crew.

Yes, I am disappointed, but I also cannot express how thankful I am for content like that which is contained in this video. I’m glad I am not alone in learning what to do and how to recover from an unfortunate situation like this. I cannot imagine how bad Sanjay Joshi and others who experienced more extreme losses than I feel. I am also quite thankful this horrible experience happened to me so early on in my reef keeping career so that I will be prepared should something like this ever happens again.

I thank you so much for the feedback contained in this stream, i.e., how to airate an aquarium without power or to add prime in the case of an emergency, etc. etc., and I express my condolences to those who lost parts of, or even their entire reefs, due to any uncontrollable misfortune.

This is one of the reasons I’m really glad I got the truck I did. If I ever needed to I could run my truck and use it as a generator to power my tank. A total of 2000 watts of power from the onboard inverters.

I can only imagine the devastation from the recent power outage that put all of Spain and Portugal without power for a whole day last week. Thats about 60 million people...

100% . The first thing you need to do after your system is running is to invest in a backup power source. That's pivotal, no ifs about it. I run a 12k watt gen that is wired to be plugged in and only operates a few rooms... those rooms have tanks in them lol. Also I get about 10hrs of run time. Prior storms we had power down for about 4-5 days due to high winds and fire danger... fuel management is key then.

Wifi off sucks, but I don't run controllers so I'm more manual also I have a few backup Vispectra lights (black boxes) if my AIs freak out.

Really feel for Sanjay, it would’ve a big loss to the hobby if he left.  Hopefully the community rally’s around him and gets him back on his feet.  A lesson for everyone.

This is why I invested in a whole house generator.  Comes on in seconds and is fueled by my natural gas supply.

you could give a talk at Reef Retreat about your disaster preparedness setup. Clearly a very thoughtful system without getting a whole house generator.

Smh.. rookie mistakes shouldn't be a thing for experienced reef tank owners.. and yes ventless infrared propane heaters will kill your tank if you run them in the house..

Do you have a link to your generator setup video?

Im sorry but someone like him that is incredibly experience and known in this hobby doesn't have a generator or a means to keep his tank going during a power outage????

Anyone with a reef tank who doesn't have a whole home generator needs to rethink how much money they should be putting into livestock.
