gabi not being able to let any of the baked goods cool before eating really connected with me spiritually lmao

now we need a gabi vs drew cook off to see who can fuck up the simplest recipes the most

I appreciate that each time you picked the lemon seeds out of the measuring spoon you just threw them back in the juicer, so each time you go back for more juice you're just repeatedly picking out the same seeds

I'm pretty sure Rosanna Pansino uses a stool in the kitchen and she's a baking queen. There's no reason to make it harder than it should be.

Gabi you mentioned a stool in your monologue about how the mixing was exhausting. You are allowed to use one if it helps. I promise we will all beat up anyone who is mean about it. <3

Why is no one talking about how impressive the kitchen green screening is? 😂

I mean this with the upmost kindness: You used your lemon juicer with the built in strainer (that's easier to use) to break oreos, but not to juice lemons. I hope you see this for the sake of your sanity and the little cut on your finger. Please remember him for the next lemon loaf 💛.

A minute of silence for that undeveloped gluten 😔

Only at 40:58 did I JUST realize the background to the left of the fridge is Green Screen 😭😭😭 I was preoccupied before and absolutely thought she moved or something…

Some notes on the buns, since I’ve seen some incorrect comments:

No, the recipe didn’t call for water. It called for a water glass to measure the milk with (weird for us, but probably makes more sense to someone in turkey).

The translation you used was really off. When it said “middle of yeast”, it meant to say “put yeast in a well in the middle of the flour with milk”. This would’ve let it activate (not required, but it helps you know if your yeast is still alive).

You usually need to knead dough for about 8 minutes with your hands to get such a smooth dough as shown in the video (I usually use a stand mixer). This is a problem with the recipe, as they probably assumed those making the recipe would have known this already.

There should have definitely been an initial rest of the dough after kneading for about an hour. I’m inclined to believe they just forgot this because it’s such a crucial step.

Edit in case you ever want to make the recipe again, here’s a correctly translated version with tweaks to make it turn out better!:

Dough:
500 g flour
200 ml lukewarm milk
2 eggs
8 g salt
60 g butter at room temperature
20 g granulated sugar
7 g Active dry yeast (1 packet)
1.5 cups chocolate chips

For the filling:
Nutella

Instructions:
1) Mix sugar (minus 1 teaspoon) and flour in a mixing bowl and make a well in the center

2) Mix yeast and lukewarm milk (not too hot!) and leftover teaspoon of sugar in a separate bowl. Let the yeast sit for about 5 minutes (it should puff up if alive). After 5 minutes, pour milk and yeast into well in the flour.

3) Add the eggs and salt into the well and mix the eggs with the milk. Gather flour from the sides and bring it into the well until a shaggy dough forms.

4) Add the butter and knead again. Knead for 8 minutes by hand or 5 minutes with a stand mixer on medium high. The dough should be smooth and supple. If it isn’t, you haven’t kneaded long or hard enough.

5) Put dough in a greased bowl and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about an hour. Cover it with plastic wrap so it doesn’t dry out

6) Lightly flour your work surface. Take the dough, push the air out of it, and add the chocolate chips into it (take care not to add too much flour to the dough at this point. You shouldn’t need too much flour on your work surface if you kneaded correctly). You add the chips after the initial rest because the dough will have relaxed a bit and it will make it easier to add them in without them flying everywhere.

7) Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces, roll each piece into a ball, and roll each one out to 15x15 cm. Add the Nutella in the middle, tightly close the edges, and place on a baking tray to rise, covered, for 30 minutes.

8) After rising, brush buns with milk and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 15-18 minutes. Let sit for about an hour and enjoy!

I love that Gabi has no clue of baking (dangerously unaware) but has a sifter 😂

20:25 i said out loud to myself “that looks like it’s too dry” THE LAUGH THAT CAME OUT WHEN YOU REALIZED YOU FORGOT THE WATER 😭😭

One short queen to another - no shame in a kitchen stool. I even ask for them at other people’s houses when I cook elsewhere.

my thing is: if you’re already pulling out the mixer and baking sheet, how is a 4-ingredient cookie ANY simpler than a REGULAR cookie??? like at that point just make the regular cookie, it’s like the same amount of work for a shittier result

WHY were you following two recipes at once omg the chocolate buns stressed me out SO MUCH 😭🙏

I watched my mother cut out recipes from the newspaper nearly every day of my childhood. We always ate the same meals.

"This is one lemon's worth of zest" -Gabi with a mostly unzested lemon on the counter 🤣

As a baker, watching you decide to skip the second rise on the chocolate buns hurt

this video is a little ampidextrous

Preppy Kitchen has down to the point, foolproof recipes. He doesn't just skip steps, he does it all on camera, AND he explains WHY we do the things we do.
He doesn't just tell you to cream the butter and sugar, he explains why you should do it and usually gives out alternative steps if possible.
So far, none of his recipes have ever failed me.
