In this episode of the Coaching Culture Schools Rugby Series, Ben Herring goes inside one of New Zealand’s most iconic rugby institutions — Auckland Grammar School — with Deputy Principal and First XV coach Dave Askew.
With more than 150 years of rugby history, 54 All Blacks and 65 championships, Grammar has an extraordinary record. But this conversation goes beyond results to explore what actually sustains that success across generations.
Dave shares the importance of tradition, discipline and belonging; the philosophy of “School Rules Plus One”; why representing the First XV is a privilege, not a right; and why Auckland Grammar deliberately avoids using the term “high performance” with its young athletes.
They also discuss developing young men beyond rugby, creating certainty and confidence through strong systems, supporting coaches and parents, and why success should ultimately be measured by far more than championships.
A fascinating look inside a rugby programme where standards, tradition and care have been built over generations.
