Like most sitcoms, Roseanne is filled to the brim with jokes. Yet, it still managed to tell deep, realistic, dramatic stories. Let's talk about that.

As a long time poor, I would also like to add that Roseanne portrayed working poor better than any other show that I know of. Good vid.

"You didn't kill him and go buy chicken, did you??" One of the greatest lines.

These scenes make me feel that in Roseanne you have real people cracking jokes, while in the Friends scene the people ARE the jokes

I think people slightly misunderstand that look between Roseanne and Dan. She wasn't telling him what to do, she was giving him permission to do what she knew he wanted to do. Dan is a man who will stand up for his family but he knows Rosie doesn't like him fighting. That look was consent.

Didn’t even address the best part of the episode, when the cops politely come for Dan, and he makes a point of leaving Jackie out of it because she said she didn’t want people to know. Especially considering she was trying to/ or already was a cop, and that people would think she couldn’t even defend herself against her own boyfriend. And Dan just accepted his punishment for defending the woman that annoyed him the most, but was still his FAMILY, and he loved her. That’s clutch!!!

Shows like Friends are remembered because of their goofy characters. Shows like Roseanne are remembered for their story telling and heart.

"Let's pretend it's the 1990's." Say no more, I'm in.

The scene when Dan takes his coat and walks out gives you chills. I've been saying that for 30 years.

This show was the best representation of a working-class household. I tear up whenever I watch it because it reminds me so much of my childhood.

10:23 when Rosanne said we can make up names, I can be Wilma and you can be Betty, I chuckled because I remember Dan as Fred Flintstone from my childhood

My favorite part of this show is how much crap everyone gives to each other, but when it gets serious, the goofy putdowns of each other are dropped and all hands on deck to protect a family member.

You're so right about the humor contrast between Roseanne and Friends, one feels unrealistic and like a writer wrote punchlines, and the other feels like you are sitting in the middle of a real family that is going through stress and joking just to make it through.

I was like 9 when I saw Dan leave the house that time I looked at my step-dad and he looked me dead in the eyes and just said yep

Darlene telling Dan ‘mum says we have a new daddy now’ is my all time favourite line and happily lives rent free in my head ❤

@iinvaderrand 1 year ago

I just love how Dan does it with no words, just understanding what needs to be done. It doesn't treat the audience like idiots. He sees the problem and he takes action. Other sitcoms would have a line that would be a call to action.

"It just goes to show how abuse often goes undetected by everyone except the abused." The sad thing is, it often goes undetected/unidentified by the abused too.

@USAtheist-lnfidel 11 months ago

The acting from the whole cast, top to bottom and even small parts like Dan's poker buddies, was just stellar. Goodman gets a lot of credit, but seriously...one of the best casts ever.
