I always get a feeling of heavy sadness whenever I watch or read about the history of Mexico City

Mexican here. Born and raised in Mexico City. Big thank you for explaining how my City was created. When trying to tell it to other colleagues from overseas, it's mind breaking for them to get that most you can see used to be a lake.

Babe, wake up! Mexico City just dropped!

It’s Veracruz with an E. Great video!

I was in the 2017 earthquake in one of the most impacted neighborhoods called Narvarte, I had to walk over 3 hours to get home as the whole city was paralyzed. I saw buildings fall on top of each other with people inside of them. I do not wish that upon anyone.

Earthquakes in Mexico City are no joke! I currently live in California and people freak out for the slightest movement, and there isn’t even damage on the buildings or anything.
Also, in Mexico City people have been taught since little what to do during earthquakes, since they happen quite often.
Great video. ❤

This was cool and I loved the visuals but I wish you'd featured some Mexican experts! Could add a lot especially about the water crisis and picked up on some smaller mistakes in the vid.

No wonder maps are one of the best windows into history. Loved the attention to even the smallest details like the route of Cortés. Great video!

The pyramids aligning to the solstice is so crazy - because of the same thing in the tombs like Newgrange here in Ireland... It's wild how the people on opposite sides of the planet did the same thing.

My god, he’s done it again. Another Steiner banger. Your blending of history with cartographic examination is always amazing. I’d love to see you tackle Philadelphia sometime soon. America’s first grid city. Teeming with history. You’d have a field day.

So European -‘How beautiful! It’s mine now’

the liquifaction demo 😳

thank you for the brain candy! involving local scholars as a standard for these would be great.

It ended so abruptly 😢

This video is amazing, in Mexico they teach us the history of the city and how it was built but they make a terrible job explaining to children how it was drained and what portion of the city was actually inside the lake. Your video should be put in schools all over the country.

It's always weird when someone invites so many outsider experts to a video and misses a little few things a Mexican would have probably considered.

As someone who’s been extremely interested with tenochtitlan for years and has done a lot of research on it I just want to say that your video is probably one of the best videos on this topic available online

I always wonder what a benevolent version of the Aztecs would look like.  The Spaniards relied heavily on indigenous resistance to Aztec oppression during their conquest.  What a different world it would have been if the Spaniards had never received that support

Damn! You made me so proud of my home yet so sad at the same time. Tenochtitlán could hold so many answers to the huge challenges we will face in the years to come with global warming, rising sea levels and sustainable food production. Nezahualcóyotl, the emperor, if I’m not mistaken, even had an aqueduct that watered his flower garden that had species from many different places.
BTW, with all due respect to all your work of course and in no way trying to discredit or minimize this AMAZING video, the mexica and the Aztecs are actually not the same people. The term has been used as synonyms in the English language thanks to English historians that never cared to make the corrections, but the Spanish eventually corrected themselves as they started gaining understanding of the mexicas.
So the Mexicas were, in their history and myths, descendants of the Aztecs, which were the inhabitants of the Mythical city of Aztlan, thought to have been north west, but the mexicas split from the Aztecs because they heard the call of Huitzilopochtli, the God of War and Victory, to look for the Royal Eagle on a Cactus, which would be the place were they should build the capital of their new empire, Tenochtitlán. Even if mythically they are related, the Mexicas are the true founders of the city and the empire, and they called themselves mexicas (meshicas in pronounciation) after Mexico, which roughly translated means “in the navel of the moon” or “in the center of the lake of the moon”. (Metztli= moon, xictli= navel, co=place). ❤

I been saying it for years that Mexico has many Earthquakes because its on top of Tenochtitlan.

When the Aztecs ran this city, they had the infrastructure and knowledge about the lake that surrounded them to the point that they built dams and levees to prevent flooding and separate drinking water from irrigation water. They were quite the engineers and now look at how the new modern city is sinking because someone thought that draining a huge lake would be a good idea.
